I don't know anything about him but I'm watching the show Sunday Morning and I love what he just said (in the context of his opposition to Brexit as he ties it in with his new book):
"The difference between patriotism and nationalism is a patriot can criticize his country, stay with it, and go through the democratic process. A nationalist needs an enemy.

I will paraphrase another great quote
"And just like those who are fed up with it and aren't going to take it anymore he lined up for another helping by the populist conman"

(18,964 posts)I started watching the BBC version of SMILEY'S PEOPLE!
In significant ways Tinker Tailor and Smiley's People are relevant to what we as a nation are now experiencing...
p.s. I equate Putin with Karla....bigtime!!!

(6,855 posts)Putin is a perfect Karla (except putin would never sacrifice himself for his daughter or anyone else and Karla was an honest communist. I dont think hed enrich himself at the expense of Mother Russia).
Loved those series I only just found them on YouTube last month. Had not seen them since they were on PBS in late 70s, early 80s.

(30,745 posts)I have not done that in recent years. There is no particular reason for that.
I liked Smiley.
Le Carre had a background in the spying business himself.

(14,022 posts)was appropriately almost invisible in a small, but important, Smiley appearance in "The Spy Who Came in from the Cold."
Cyril Cusack, as Control, was mesmerizing. Great cast, overall. Martin Ritt might never have pulled off a masterpiece, but he made some really good movies.

(18,964 posts)I didn't realize Martin Ritt also did Hud and Hemmingway's "Advertures of a Young Man"..the later was filmed in Mellen, Wisconsin which (it is said) was the most depressing town he could find....

I would suggest you start with "The Spy Who Came in from the Cold" first.
You can even watch the great movie version starring Richard Burton.

(53,410 posts)Nationalism is jingoism.
The rest of us love our country, but we respect and like other countries and cultures so we welcome immigrants and feel pride in our ethnic and racial differences. We see ourselves as diverse, and more than that, as stronger because of that diversity.
Nationalists just hate every bit of that with all their beings. Plus, they contribute nothing to our country except hatred.

(31,261 posts)He explained how and why he wrote his first book, "The Spy that came in from the cold" or something like that, he also explained why he took a penname. He actually worked in Intelligence as an analyst. He seemed to be a pretty thoughtful and down to earth person, he loaths Trump.
