Is it just me, or do tRumps methods of instigating false stories of an 'investigation' bring back memories of October, 2016 and James Comey's letter to Congress stating that additional Hillary emails had been found and would be investigated? It's pretty apparent that THAT letter probably swayed just enough voters in crucial states to cost Hillary the election.
I just can't get rid of the feeling that tRump somehow pressured Comey to send that letter.
Am I crazy?

(46,051 posts)They didn't have any sort of relationship at the time as far as I know. Comey didn't seem to admire him at any point.

(37,160 posts)Recall his reason for the letter: the funny business around the "Trump country" New York FBI office about their handling of Anthony Weiner's laptop, and the false "leaks" about material that was "found" (not actually found) on it.
The "leaks" came via people connected to, but not then actually in, the NY office: Giuliani, (suspected) James Kallstrom, and other anonymous people thought to be ex-agents.

(46,051 posts)That would be different from Comey pressuring him to make the announcement.

(11,738 posts)Trump was only a candidate and had no power in 2016.
There is a theory out there the Rudy Giuliani was involved in the Comey thing. Randi Rhodes (if you find her credible) was rerporting that Giuliani worked closely with the FBI officers in the New York office during his days as the Attorney for the SDNY and as the Mayor of New York. There were agents in that office that absolutely hated Hillary Clinton. The speculation is that they sat on the information about Anthony Wiener's computer deliberately, timing it so that Comey had little option to report that new information had been found that might lead to new information. Normally, if proper procedure had been followed, they would have reviewed the information, found out that there was nothing there except duplicate emails already investigated, and that would have been that. Sitting on the information until one to 2 weeks before the election meant two choices. Comey could have sat in the information until after the election and faced charges of trying to tamper with an election by covering up a potential crime, or actually tamper with the election by announcing the finding. Remember that Republicans controlled both houses of Congress at that time. They would have strung Comey up if he had not done anything. Rudy would have had the agents release the information and the fact that Comey did nothing about it.

(11,519 posts)To my feeble little mind anyway, this makes perfect sense. It's nearly the same scandal tRump was trying to use against Biden..... false claims of an 'investigation'.

(1,822 posts)Coney felt pressured in the form of RW media, but not Trump directly. I have always felt Comey wasnt deliberately trying to hurt Clinton, but he, like most, thought she would win and if it later came out there was some possible evidence that the FBI sat on it would be a huge scandalous story portrayed by the RW media and GOP and possibly would lead to investigations into the new president. So he let Congress know and of course they leak like a sieve and the rest is history.
