I saw a news person ask this of about 10 Republican women all if whom were working. Most were not crazy about Trump as president. I think only one woman still liked him.
Several who had better jobs said they were making more. The woman working a regular people's job was doing worse.
I get SS and pet sit on the side. My money coming on is about the same but prices for food and other necessities are a lot higher.

(32,690 posts)Buying is easier, more folks retiring, down sizing and going bankrupt. Fewer folks are collecting. Easier to buy, harder to sell.

(32,690 posts)Also do auctions with a friend, once a month in the winter.
I enjoy and do well with items for man cave decor. Also like strange and unusual, items that I have to research because no one knows what it is. I do general antiques that are the usual things, but I work very hard and drive many miles to find those at dirt cheap prices and then sell at low prices. Had my own store in the 90s and have been in a bunch of malls. Vintage car parts, medical devices, unique post cards and paper, vintage guitars and tools. Let me know if you are looking for anything.

(31,828 posts)With the cap on SALT I'm paying taxes to my town for my house, and the Federal Government.
I'm the situation/state where I actually lose with the SALT cap, but benefit from the Tax Scam.
I'm losing money.

(22,037 posts)However, my recent successes have nothing to do with Trump.
I've had a new business affiliation for the last couple of years and my associates are much more proactive than the old ones. They've increased our business by something like 40-50%.
Additionally, my ex-wife's boyfriend moved in with her which meant that my alimony payments ended. That changed things a lot!
Fuck Trump. He's an idiot.

(1,287 posts)fed income tax went up due to SALT no longer being deductible, we are doing better financially, but not because of Donald. Husband moved into another job which paid significantly more in 2016 - so his step increases and COLA (hes a state employee) are more each year than in his previous position. Also, being done with college tuition in 2015 was a like getting a big raise for us as we paid about $20k of his tuition from present (at the time) income. Weve always lived well below our means which has enabled us to pay for private high school and private college for kid.
Our retirement investments are doing well and we are able to be slightly more risky (for our age) as husband will retire with a very nice pension. Im also sitting on approx $100k in cash which we will give to kid for help with down payment on a house when the time comes.
My kid is doing fantastic too. Has a great job, excellent salary for 26 yr. old and thanks to the bank of mom and dad, graduated college with no debt. So, he has been able to max out his 401k and have other, non retirement investments, plus a very healthy emergency fund. And, his company is paying up front 100% of the tuition for him to get an Executive MBA.

(11,476 posts)No young regular families could afford.
Price of grass fed meat and cage free chicken organic very expensive.
I buy organic ground turkey and make a huge pot of homemade soup every 2 weeks for a lot of meals. I have individual jars i freeze.
Eating the healthy soup for a lot of meals helps me afford better eggs, etc.
We are retired so money is the same but even with insurance percent we pay for healthcare goes up for me since i am not 65 yet for Medicare. Gas is expensive.

(5,812 posts)And I do the same thing. Large batch and save the left-overs in individual containers and freeze them.
Medicare is wonderful...I cannot say anything bad about it. But the cost of gas for the car???? Oh, my!!!
When I look around at the Big Lot stores, I see so many families buy what has to be food stuffs for their standard meals. Nothing too healthy...lots of carbs.
Very sad.

(19,993 posts)Dumpy the Clown isn't serving anybody but himself and the fat cats that want to keep him there for more tax cuts and deregulation. SS is not going to keep up with COL. Stacked courts could erode quality of life for years to come. Pity the future.

(5,814 posts)My state finally kicked in money for our university faculty for "equity pay" increases and for annual merit pay. For me, this amounted to just under $10,000 per year. Keep in mind though that the merit increase pool has been small or zero since the great recession, so I had been receiving essentially the same pay for a decade while new faculty members are coming in at market pay levels.
I don't give Trump or our governor (Bevin) credit for this state of affairs. Both are hostile to higher education and there has been nothing in their policies that have improved faculty pay or really anything for middle-class people.
On the other hand, my wife has had a very hard time finding work in our area since she left her last position in February 2019. She has had many interviews but no luck as of yet. If she wanted to commute 60 minutes 1-way in heavy traffic she would have more opportunities, but I fully support her choice to look for jobs closer to home.
Overall we have more income insecurity than we have had for years.

(9,959 posts)... probably paying more, mostly due to insurance costs increasing - so, worse as far as the bottom line is concerned. I think we're back on the GWB path... an approach like Clinton or Obama needs to come in before the next crash starts to wipe out pensions, businesses, etc...
