18. Go with Imgur instead of Photobucket

I think Photobucket has a paywall for full quality and no watermarks on a linked image. Need a paid membership for unaltered linking.

At least, that was the case a few years ago when I ditched it for Imgur for images I post to DU.

3. You can't

To post a photo on DU, the photo must exist at an address elsewhere on the internet.

There are various image hosting sites to which you can upload a photo, so that you can then post the URL of the photo here.

9. A cell phone photo doesn't have a URL.

Cell phone photos - like any other photos - have to be hosted somewhere before they can be posted here.

13. If it's moved to the cloud then it's more or less not a 'cell phone photo' anymore ...

One way or another, the photo that's saved onto the phone must be moved to a server with a publicly visible URL ... which, as you correctly point out, iCloud offers.

If one doesn't have iCloud or similar photo hosting, one must avail themselves of similar functionality.

Personally I use Imgur for this purpose on my Android.

15. Uh, if that link is to an image, it didn't work.

Only .jpg, .gif and .png files hosted at a url will appear on DU. There could be other formats, but those are the three I have tested.

For posting your own pictures the suggestions for hosting sites have changed - I have my own web site and keep a folder set up to share pictures so I can't recommend any specific ones.

14. This sort of functionality is trivial to add to any web site these days ...

I'd very much imagine that the reason it's not deployed here on DU is that the storage of (what would eventually become a LOT of) pics for the support of a commercial website ... is definitely not free.

16. The admins here don't want thousands of images stored on their server.

I can't blame them, either.

I use a blogger.com blog to host images from my phone. Then, I can just link to them to display them here. There are many ways to host an image so it will have a URL. Probably, everyone should have such a method ready to go. You can also use Twitter, but it's less convenient.

17. You can do it pretty easily

and you don't need Photobucket or anything like that. Just email it to yourself from your phone, then open the email and download the photo to your desktop and then post it on DU just like any other photo on your hard drive. Or, if you have an iphone or Google photos on your computer, copy the photo to your desktop
