For forty years I have witnessed what the Republican voters have done to themselves and to their country. It is a story of not moving forward, but backwards. A story of voting against their best interests. A story of refusing to recognizing the truth, instead swallowing propaganda whole from the people who benefit from it.
It's the story of the Republican voter being cut, hurt by their politicians and then believing their politicians who tell them it is the evil socialists who cut, hurt you.
It's the story of the Republican union worker who votes to destroy unions.
It's the story of the Republican voter who got health insurance through Obamacare and then voted to destroy.
It's the story of the Republican voter who votes to enrich and empower the rich not knowing they pay for it, not knowing this is what keeps them down and unable to move forward and get ahead, to have a better life.
It's the story of the Republican voter who collects social security, medicare, food stamps, government assistance and votes against the evil socialists who gave them all of it. The evil socialists who try to protect them from their own politicians who want to destroy all of it.
The story of the Republican voter is a story of ignorance and self destruction. They do know history of their own country, they do not know how our government works, they do not know the history of immigration which is the history of America.
For forty years I have watched the Republican politicians cut their voters a thousand times and then point and say the evil socialists did that to you. That is the story of the Republican voter.

(115,706 posts)They've done it because they were afraid someone "undeserving" (we know what that means) would get those benefits, too. So they'd rather screw themselves than allow the government to create programs that might also help those people. It's like the old Aesop's Fable about the dog in the manger.

(22,037 posts)The Republican base is so profoundly un-self aware that they cannot see their self-destructiveness. And Trump has given them license to voice their bigotry. So, they're ignorant and stupid. What could go wrong?
By the way, in your second to last paragraph, I think you meant, "They do not know the history..."
