Is this a joke?
The Nashville City Paper is reporting that the Franklin office of Pricewaterhouse Coopers was broken into, and that all of Romneys available tax returns were stolen
CityPaper Reports Tax Returns Stolen
The report indicates that Romneys returns were delivered to the local offices of both the GOP and the Democrats, in an encrypted flash drive.
Ripping a page straight from Austin Powers, the data thieves are demandingwait for itone million dollars, in bitcoins. PwC likely knows if the theft was real at this point. And by the way this was handled, it seems that the thieves may have left a bit of a trail for the FBI and others to find them before their September 28 deadline.
This isn't the way to force these returns public. And it smells too much like the Bush National Guard records story.
It will be interesting to see how this plays out, but I am spending my day getting ready to listen to the Big Dog tonight.

Williamson County Republican Party officials have received a letter and a flash drive allegedly containing the stolen tax records of GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney. Jean Barwick, the county Republican party executive director, said that an envelope was found at the front door of the party headquarters on Main Street in Franklin on Friday.
Post reporter Ken Whitehouse, who first reported the story Tuesday night, has an updated piece on The City Paper website (read here).

(21,925 posts)The stolen returns had been delivered to the Democrats when they were stolen? So there were three separate thefts since the encrypted returns were delivered to two separate political offices as well as the offices of Price Waterhouse? Is this the 2010 return we've already seen or does it involve returns for years we haven't seen? If it's the return we've already seen, how could the thieves be demanding any kind of ransom? If it involves other returns, and they were delivered to the Democrats, how could this not have made major headlines? This is vague and confusing to me.

(4,138 posts)It's a small detail in the story unless you've spent any time at all poking around the bitcoin forums or reading last summer's hilarious bitcoin thread on Something Awful.
A burglary like this story requires effort, organization/planning, and personal risk, which are alien concepts to pretty much anyone involved with bitcoins. I bet it's just someone trying to drive the speculative bitcoin market up by getting the media talking about it again.
On the off chance that it is legit, I bet they will be surprised at just how traceable bitcoins are if you want to convert them into actual money.

The SECOND pastebin was the one that demanded money after the first one that just said "We have them".
Believe what you want. I think they have the goods, and the "blackmailing" is just trying to discredit the fact that they have them.

Oh, and the second reiteration that demands money has some mumbo jumbo Christian shit that Jesus Christ is our savior, etc.
