Kentucky GOP Outraged Colleges Want Students to Know Things (Creationists, Please do Not Enter)

From that simply awful Wonkette....

"...ACT, the state’s testing company, interviews professors to figure out the things most important to student readiness for college, which sounds like a smart thing to do. Unfortunately, those professors have bad news: If you want students to do well in biology classes, they have to know about evolution.

Rather predictably, the Kentucky GOP is madder than a plumber in a Chipotle.

“I think we are very committed to being able to take Kentucky students and put them on a report card beside students across the nation,” said Republican Sen. David Givens. “We’re simply saying to the ACT people we don’t want what is a theory to be taught as a fact in such a way it may damage students’ ability to do critical thinking.”

Yes! Let’s teach students about how Chuck E. Cheese made the Earth out of popsicle sticks three years ago. We don’t want to damage them."

We have to take back the language. Theory does not mean in scientific terms what it does in the common language when someone says they have a theory on something that they haven't investigated yet. As in, "I have a theory that the cat ate the birthday cake." That's a hypothesis. You have to go observe the cat - is he still eating the cake? Frosting on his whiskers? Cake in his stomach? Can other people also verify this? Then you have a theory. (Crude example, I know). A theory is the best possible explanation we can make of an observable phenomenon with the tools available to us. Evolution is a phenomenon. Our Theory is how we think it works. If we keep letting the creationist use theory wrongly - and most likely on purpose - then it's more difficult to argue with them, and they can claim they have theories as well.

while getting to watch god burn and torture us science-blinded sinners.

Of course for others of faith in positions of power, they get to control the crowds for cash and power here on earth.

I guess.

The DNA tracking will take your ancestors all the way to Africa. How do they explain it away? If they outlaw the science of DNA, then they're gonna haveta let all the criminals convicted based on DNA go free. The stupid, it burns.

without which a student could not understand modern biology. What's worse, meaningful experimental research would be impossible without it. It would be like studying aeronautics while refusing to give credence to the concept of lift.

There is a qualitative difference between political consensus and scientific consensus. The latter is not grounded in shared opinion but on the preponderance of evidence.
