However, the perception of the risk is overestimated by many, and only parent/child and sibling relations ... really raise risks significantly ... and very few want to marry their parent or blood-sibling.

Not to mention, you don't have to have kids.

You also could be old enough for one or both to be sterile , or for one or the other to be sterile by other means (some states allow incestuous marriage in such cases, in fact).

Rates of defect caused by consanguineous relations are also lower in societies with a very low level of society-wide consanguinity (such as in the US, where it's never 'been a thing', and that is very unlikely to change, even if laws changed). IOW, if you marry your cousin, you're likely to be the first one in your family who's done so ... in the USA.

It's really repeated generations of inbreeding that tends to raise risks of problems, not a single isolated generation, iow.

I kinda feel like if we're not going to make it outright illegal to smoke and drink during pregnancy ... we really aren't THAT serious as a society about preventing birth defects.

I also think a reasonable case can be made that it's really 'not the governments business'. Though I can also see one made to the contrary as well.

21. My bigger concern is related to child abuse and marriage laws.

Many states, including mine, still have an "except your spouse" in their statutory language forbidding statutory rape.

We still allow minors to marry with parental consent, and even if one party is barely 18 when they do marry, they could have been abused by that relative prior to that.

We need to really fix our laws regarding the abuse of minors, and marriage of minors to people who would otherwise be rapists if they weren't married before the sex, before we strike down barriers to incestuous legal marriage.

Then, if two cousins who grew up together and are truly in love want to get married when they both turn 18. it can be up to them to decide how they'll deal with the potential for recessive genes being an issue. But we won't be legalizing a father consenting for his brother to marry his 14 year old daughter because there was abusive incest and they don't want to abort the child and feel "wedlock" is more important than the 14 year old getting raped by her uncle.
