about End Times in Islam. I don't know how many Muslims subscribe seriously to this belief but Islamic fundies in Iran (and elsewhere?) do.

The idea of end-of-the-world battles between good and evil with a final judgment originated in ancient Persia with Zoroastrianism. It was picked up and tweaked to fit Judaism when the Persians conquered Babylon and freed the captive Jews to return to Israel under Persian rule.

Christianity inherited the belief from its Judaic roots, tweaked again to fit Christian beliefs. Christian fundies place great literal emphasis on this belief and continually try to interpret world events to fit it.

Mon Jan 13, 2020, 08:51 AM
Jan 2020

who followed the prosperity gospel. I was a college student working two jobs, one on campus and one across town. My used car was an absolute necessity for getting to classes and work.

When the car became undriveable due to a needed expensive repair, the landlady offered me a deal. She would lend the money to me if I signed the title over to her and would sell it back to me when I paid her back, plus the difference between the repair and the book value. Meantime, she would allow me to drive it to work and classes. The car, including the body, was in very good shape, except for the one repair needed.

She told me how her pastor taught that the good would prosper at the expense of the bad. If I was truly good, I would not lose the car and would be able to pay her back. The profit to her in the deal was part of God's promise to her for helping me.

I went to a college counselor with my financial problem. She referred me to the financial aid department. They sent me to the dean who said they had an emergency fund for students if a financial crisis threatened their ability to continue classes. I was on tbe dean's list and tutored other students at the college's learning center, so he arranged for me to get the money and have an affordable amount deducted regularly from my tutoring paycheck. Worked out well.

Landlady was not happy that I found my own solution. Took away my driveway parking privilege. By the time the lease expired to allow her to raise the rent or not renew it, I was ready to graduate and move on.

from a prior incident when a visiting speaker at the student union publicly insulted the dean in front of everyone with an undeserved and inaccurate criticism. I spoke up on the facts, never realizing that the dean would later remember me as "You're the one who defended me, aren't you?"

The landlady was a real nut case on religion. She was also a cousin to a more rational friend of mine, so I hesrd a lot more about how the landlady got drawn into the prosperity gospel. Sad case of escaping a bsd reality in her life by clinging to the promises of a fundie religion.

During my under grad I was taking an intro to journalism course, they brought in someone who was not a professor who worked for the local paper to teach the course.

She tended to wear black slacks, and one day leaned against the black board when she was speaking to us, getting a big line of chalk across the back of her butt.

No one said anything the rest of the class, I hung while everyone left after the class ended and told her one of the hazards of teaching was wearing black pants and leaning on blackboards. Took her a second but she got it, smiled and said thanks.

I did the math after the final and had fell a few points from getting an A, but when I got my grades, got an A.

...with the notion that the most important thing is to return America to being a “Christian nation” worthy of God’s favor, and that the specific way to do that is through “pro-life” (no abortion) and “pro-family” (no tolerance for LGBTQ) policies. Thus, making sure those become the law of the land is the end that justifies any means – including almost literally “making a deal with the devil.”

Lots of fundies equate Trump to King Cyrus of (ironically enough) Persia, a pagan who reestablished the Jews in Israel after they had been exiled. Keep in mind that Cyrus was not a Jew, and there’s not even much indication that he was thought of as a particularly good man by his Jewish subjects. But he “served God’s purpose.” Similarly, I suspect many, many evangelicals realize Trump is an evil person, and expect him to wind up in Hell. But, to their minds, it doesn’t matter. As long as he can make sure America is put back on the “right road” (by ending abortion, same-sex marriage, and LGBTQ rights), they need to support him 100% in achieving those goals…and then, once they’ve gotten what they wanted, and America has become a “Christian nation” certain to be the recipient of God’s blessings, he can be abandoned to his dire fate.

We’re being told that many evangelicals support Trump because they see him as a modern-day Cyrus the Great. Cyrus was the founder of the Persian Empire. Somebody else saw himself as a latter-day Cyrus, but used the Hebraicized rendering of the name -- Koresh; he didn’t exactly end well. So, whatever became of Persia? These days it’s known as Iran.

Christianity inherited it from Judaism, with a Christian interpretation.

I say 95% because there are a small number of evangelicals who are liberal or considered liberal churches. Like Jimmy Carter is an "evangelical", but obviously has an extremely different interpretation of what that means.
