However, it's not like there isn't a good reason why parts of The Expanse fandom refers to Bezos as "Jules Pierre Bezos" from time to time. He might have saved our favorite show, but let's not lose sight of the fact that because scumbags like him and Musk are allowed to run with minimal or no oversight is why the solar system is in such a crapsack state in that series.

(31,261 posts)Amazon deliveries are pretty solid for me also. Stuff arrives on time, usually via their Postal Service link.
I am not sensitive to delivery times because I always buy stuff before I plan to use it (I like having things on hand, that is a quirk with me).

The reason the corp model is HORRIBLE is by DESIGN and charter they must do this, no matter the harm to society or the environment, in the case of Amazon the environment may be less of an issue but NO MATTER what they MUST crush workers if they can, etc.

(31,261 posts)I know that the USPS delivers most of what I order through Amazon, because most of what I order is what the USPS excels at delivering.

(31,261 posts)for some deliveries. For example, Amazon vans deliver packages all around where I live, but they seem to be focusing on the stuff with bigger delivery fees. The things that I order from Amazon typically have delivery fees in the $8-$14 dollar range and are smallish packages, it seems at some point, it is easier for Amazon to offload to the USPS and give up some of the delivery fee. I prefer to buy big ticket items in person, not online.

(25,862 posts)I got it some years ago and it does seem worth it.
Blue_true
(31,261 posts)No, because I buy off the beaten path stuff via Amazon, like small batch chemicals when I am working on new projects. So Prime would be a waste for me since I don't watch movies and the stuff that I read isn't what Amazon offers, plus, as I pointed out, I buy stuff that can't be found locally.
A lot of people here hate Amazon, but I find the company to be useful. For example, it sells very small reactors and other apparatus for home brewers, with a few modifications, I can use the equipment for my chemical experiments, that saves me from having to waste a lot of money on failed ideas, and save me from having out how to dispose of hundreds or thousands of gallons of chemicals, you can't just dump that stuff outside (industrial reactors start at 500-1500 gallons, Amazon offer 2-5 gallon, high quality vessels that I can have machines shops modify in a way that allows me to turn the vessels into reactors).

(14,429 posts)They use the USPS when the initial delivery gets "lost" and they need to actually get it to the customer.
I have a love/hate relationship with Amazon. I buy from other vendors when I can. I don't want Amazon to be my only choice. They're not great to their suppliers or their employees, and if they become the only game in town, they won't be great to their customers either.
Blue_true
(31,261 posts)They seem to be happy. One even suggested that I can buy through Amazon when I first started using them, I have since established a direct purchase protocol with them because of the volumes that I need (in addition to volume, which Amazon can't meet because it handles smaller batches, I save money on the actual chemicals and on shipping).
csziggy
(34,136 posts)And when I go to the local USPS location to look for them, I am told to contact Amazon for a replacement since they will replace it free. The office that both my home and post office box deliveries go through is notorious for bad or non-existent services. Amazon may be fed up with having packages "lost" and having to replace them.
I suspect there are one or more thieves at that office, the PO manager knows it but don't want to turn them in. It's the only explanation I have for the really bad delivery record of that office. It has made the local newspapers more than once, so it is not just me who is having packages disappear after the tracking number shows as arriving at that location.

(2,061 posts)Is giving pretty big incentives and a lot of assistance to people who want to own a local Amazon delivery outfit. The individual actually owns the business. Almost all of my deliveries are coming like that now. Its also my understanding that their incentives and assistance are attracting owners.
Sorry if Im wrong. That is how I understand it. Its going to be thousands of different businesses delivering their packages but because of contractual obligations they will almost all be identical, including software and vehicles.

(31,261 posts)I live in a pretty urban area. Amazon delivery truck are delivering to homes and businesses in the area, but I have not had a single one of my deliveries delivered by an Amazon contractor. The contractors seem to only handle items that have shipping fees that are considerably higher than the items that I buy bring. So the Postal Service delivers Amazon packages to me.

(1,883 posts)Here, prolly mando and banjo strings.
Hoyt
(54,770 posts)Heck, I can even get 2 day delivery on some mandola and Octave mandolin strings. But, the less popular sets arent available with fast shipping.
They charge a bit extra per set to cover quick shipping, so I try to bulk order from places like Juststrings. Unfortunately, they are more expensive if you just need a set or two because they charge a flat shipping rate. They ship USPS and usually here in 3 days, but not guaranteed.
I prefer USPS for most things. Probably because I used to ride with my grandad back in the 1950s when he filled in on a rural route.

My son just started working for him (Bezos). He isn't delivering or putting packages together. He was a NASA manager and is now working for Blue Origin. (Against my advice, btw) And Jeff wants to put not only rich people in a few minutes of weightlessness and then low earth orbit (LEO) he's going for landing on the moon. "Expense" isn't just sci-fi, it's Bezos vision.
We're in a BRAVE NEW WORLD -- maybe.

subcontracted to do its own delivery. One don't-give-a-fuck whackjob left a package at the bottom of our drive, out of sight of house or neighbors but in full view of potential thieves, and right where we'd drive over it in the dark if we didn't see it. But that's been cleaned up. Good now. FAR from sucky.
As older rural dwellers, on-line shopping and to-the-door delivery are a great boon to us. Beyond doubt it saves us money on gas and on purchases (through Amazon as well as other direct-delivery vendors). And of course, it opens up a world of choices. Most on-line merchants now have a review function, but they're often less honest, less reliable or too limited. Three reviews are usually close to worthless. Much of the world now does basic consumer product research at Amazon.
Another benefit Amazon specifically first brought the world is that, due to the product review function, the average quality of merchandise has risen enormously, as have the number of choices.
Very young people would find it hard to believe that not long ago almost NO toasters, including name brands, didn't perform their very simple functions adequately, often poor to terrible, and often broke quickly. Suppliers were getting away with it because purchasers didn't know, just thought/hoped the particular one they bought was a dud. And almost every store in every region carried the same merchandise, literally the same 5 or so products max, from most often three name brands, so consumer options were very limited to the same lousy products. Had to go well upscale to break out of that exploitation, or at least widen the choices a bit, but do it in the car because distance shopping was still close to nonexistent.
Dislike what's not good about Amazon. Decide for yourself what that is. Do I worry that it's too big and powerful? You bet. But aside from that, and considering the whole world is in a transition period exemplified by it, I think it's been amazingly beneficial from the beginning, including climatically. We're going to have to deny ourselves in future, though, in order to make substantial diminution in on-line/delivery's footprints; as things worsen, we will. Most of the new exploitative warehouse jobs are already being eliminated or upgraded to higher skill and pay.
But for perspective, remember that we tragically lost most of what we wanted to preserve long ago when local merchants in little town centers closed, and with them the places communities interconnected. Imo, on-line is overall a great, great advance over what replaced them, which is the miles of ugly local strip malls people drive to to shop, one strip mall after another, and the big regional malls that people drive even farther to. At least we can say unequivocally that it is for us.
