They can't expect to wage all out war against the US. They don't have the firepower or means to invade here.
They can ramp up attacks in Iraq and Syria on our forces and try to fight a proxy war with us there (which they pretty much had already been doing).
I'm not sure where this leaves their Supreme Leader. He can't WIN a war per se, but much like Iraq he can create complete chaos and turn the American public sour on what they would see as a pointless war. However, with the popularity of Soleimani he is kind of backed into a corner. The wise thing to do is not invite death and destruction on his country by ramping up war efforts, but surely the people would see him as weak and potentially rebel if he does nothing.
How Iran responds to this killing is what is a great mystery to me. We have killed a person responsible for great death and suffering, but if the death and suffering only increases because of the anger over his killing, what have we accomplished? This is the gamble drumpf has made with not just our country, but possibly the entire world.
