General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsFlorida's shaping up to be Trump's main election staging state.
First, MF45's golfing convenience, of course, is used to 'message' his DC henchmen through Graham who's played with him 15 times so far.
Graham is the new Nunes.
Second, Bigly church crowds are useful for campaign video ad optics of leader love.
Third, Florida's evangelicals are useful to drive the nationwide christo-fascist messaging/fervor/vote.
Fourth, Dupes wear "I'd rather be Russian than Democrat" T-shirts while Russians conveniently fly in and out in their Gulfstreams.
Fifth, Trump gets to hang with his billionaire (FL has 52) buddies to plot global & domestic strategy for 2020.
Sixth, global laundering flows through Florida and the Caribbean banks like water through the Everglades.
Seventh, KKK and gun culture thrive in Florida.
Eighth, preserving those electoral college votes from the third biggest state needs attention.
Ninth, Russian hackers of Florida voting system needs attention.
Tenth, old white men need their warmth.
Wintering down here helps me notice 45's affinity for Florida right wing demographics; there are probably more reasons I've overlooked, so please add any more that seem relevant.

(16,296 posts)In 1972, Democratic registered 69%, Republican 28%, and 3% other.
In 1992, Democratic registered 51%, Republicans 41%, and 8% other.
In 2013, Democrats registered 40%, Republicans 35%, and 25% other.
In 2016, Democrats registered 38%, Republicans 36%, and 26% other
--- Notice the huge "Other" trend- guess people got fed up with the two major parties and those "others" found the Repuke message more appealing.----
Florida gave us Obama for a few decent years. I can remember Karl Rove running down the hallway to the room where they verified votes to demand that the experts were wrong in giving Obama the state.
But, yes, the state did swing right for Trump. I live in the Panhandle of the Sunshine state (Matt Gaetz land) and there is little hope it will in my lifetime , turn Blue. My son who has lived here said that the Panhandle was once a strong, strong Democratic area, but school desegregation made it swing conservative and gave a boom to home schooling, private schools, and charter schools.

(36,081 posts)Obama, sure, but MF45's out to beat down the Dems and black vote, and turn this state red again, with all the lawyers, hackers, money, rednecks and Russians he can use to do it.
From where I sit, it's not looking good for Florida Democrats.

(46,736 posts)They have already been caught in political machinations. If my guess is right and things are about to escalate, then everyone that was here in the nineties that could have exposed them, but didn't, is responsible.

(43,182 posts)Our statewide elections are frequently razor thin.
And while there may be sizable support for Trump in Florida based on population and the existence of certain demographics amongst others, there is also a sizeable opposition to Trump based on same.
Florida is not a super red state by any stretch of the imagination.

(36,081 posts)Read packman's post above, and consider that Florida's only 40th in income, it's had two Republican senators and a Republican statehouse for awhile, and sends reps like Matt DUI Gaetz and Vern Buchanan to Congress.
We'll see how the primary and general turnout goes.
2020 is as much do-or-die for well-heeled Republicans as it is for Democracy.
Right now I'm not hopeful.

(43,182 posts)That hadnt happened in over 30 years.
All certainly is not lost.
Gerrymandering is what has protected a lot of the legislative and congressional seats for Republicans. A few years back we passed a referendum which was supposed to make the districts more proportional, but the legislature found ways to try to soften that blow to their majority.

(36,081 posts)on behalf of the Big Sugar cartel, killers of the biggest ecosystem East of the Mississippi; it's still got Republican senators, a Republican statehouse, Republican dark money, and Republican rigged elections since 2000.
It will take 260,000 more votes for us to win against Trump than it did when Hillary ran. That's called close.
Just remember that what structurally causes FL, WI, MI to stay "close" in minority wins, can keep that state Republican through "close" voting forever.
Close is how Trump, Russians and FL billionaires want to keep it.
I will change my residence from IL to FL to vote Dem here in November. I'll join in party canvassing for our nominee. But I won't forget the structural cheating Democrats face.
I hope any DU'er who wants Florida to turn blue this year can find a way to come on down, set up residence and help do this.
