The US military confirms an ongoing rocket attack on Al-Asad airbase where US troops are based. Its the one Trump said Iraq would have to pay for if the US leaves.

(10,039 posts)They are ballistic missile attacks. This is a huge escalation.
coti
(4,612 posts)I.E., is it "get in the bunker, the mortars are hitting" or is it "the base is gone"?
jayfish
(10,039 posts)In numbers it would be "the base is gone". Depending on what they launched we could be taking about 2 ton warheads delivered with GPS accuracy.
localroger
(3,630 posts)...give or take, depending on the exact warhead power (thinking 500 kg bomb here). Out to a few hundred meters people are seriously wounded but survive if lucky or protected and die if they are unlucky catching shrapnel. They also don't aim well, so if you're trying to wipe out a large area of more than a few hundred meters across a lot of your bombs get wasted bombing stuff that's already been bombed. Depending on how far you're ranging from a lot of them might not even hit your target. Rocket targeting is notoriously hard and is one of the our war machine's better skills.
Calista241
(5,586 posts)The Hellfires we fired a few days ago are super small anti-armor weapons.
I wonder what our response will be.
localroger
(3,630 posts)These are more what you would use to soften up a battlefield from a safe distance before sending in the infantry. Not really something you attack really remote targets with. Like North Korea Iran has shown little skill hitting targets with any accuracy at distance so their ability to land a missile 1,000 miles away is pretty useless for practical strategic purposes.
Calista241
(5,586 posts)Trump made a big deal about calling off our retaliation 10 minutes before bombs / missiles were about to fly. Since this is a manned facility, I don't think anyone trying to convince him to call it off will be successful this time.
jayfish
(10,039 posts)We don't want to invite more attacks while we are in a buildup phase. I'd also be very wary about losing a carrier in all of this. It would be a hit that would be hard to recover from quickly and a major victory for Iran. Iran has the capability.
uponit7771
(90,364 posts)... that warning all to hell now.
Iran see's a build up they start lobbing big time

(10,039 posts)I'm sure that nifty Russian SAM system is fully spun up and waiting for our response. This is going to be unlike anything we have seen in 50 years.

(90,364 posts)...think we're portraying hyperbole but so did folk when it came to Germany in 45.
Calista241
(5,586 posts)In a theoretical all out attack, the US may spend a few days destroying SAM launchers and air defense radars, but the US ability to dominate Iranian air space is unquestioned.
Iran's only ability to affect this, would be to sink our aircraft carrier, as well as destroy US air bases at Diego Garcia, in Qatar, Oman, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Iraq. I'm not even counting Turkish or Israeli bases the US could utilize in a pinch. An attack from Iran neutralizing 40% of these assets would be wildly successful, and that damage would likely only last for a few days.
Such an attack would have global repercussions on the economy, but from a strictly military sense, Iran would lose a conflict with the US just a few moments after it started.

(19,114 posts)They shot missiles at military bases. Media is using the word "housing" in their headlines to invoke previous attacks when our troops' barracks were hit by missiles. We don't know if anyone was harmed or even if the missiles reached their targets yet. I hope they missed and we can have a better chance to de-escalate.
These bases are where US troops are stationed. Whether or not their housing units were hit is not known.
coti

(19,114 posts)When I first saw the headline I thought for an instant they were saying that the troops housing was hit by missiles. That could very well be the case, but that headline was meant to mislead IMO.
