Thinking only of himself and his desperate situation - he thought that killing this Iranian General would take 'impeachment' off the front pages of the news. Well - it backfired and instead he has precipitated talk of war with Iran instead.

Now that this has escalated - he'll be looking for someone else to blame this on. The only problem is that he is running out of people to blame things on.

It's time for the adults in the room to put a stop to this guy. The Repugs have to stop circling the wagons for this guy.

He is a reactionary, he doesn't understand that actions have consequences, and whatever decisions he makes he does thinking that it will benefit him, and his bank account.

All his life he had daddy bail him out of the crap he made, then when daddy was gone he had a bunch of lawyers who took on daddy's role, so he has never seen the consequences first hand and doesn't understand anything about consequences.

His thoughts must have been "I will approve killing the general and the whole country will be behind me, they will cheer and forget about the impeachment, maybe even Congress will stop the hoax against me."...or something like that, but never asking himself question of "if I do this, what are the consequences, how will...etc., etc.", he doesn't have the smarts or instinct to do that.
