(576 posts)With long supply lines and an Iraqi population and government against us with shia militias, those troops don't stand a chance. They'll be swallowed up.
Iran has the 8th largest army in the world, with over a million people in its military.

(8,419 posts)Also, what in the long term history of Iran leads you to believe that they think in short term economic gains/losses?
braddy
(3,585 posts)a couple of weeks ago because of unrest.
Iran is in a delicate and vulnerable position and the loss of Soleimani really puts a crimp in their terrorist operations as he had talent difficult to repeat.

(576 posts)Iran is going after our economy. This is their plan.
It's on the brink of going into recession for month's; the raise in oil and gas prices will put a stake in it for a decade.

(673 posts)that military and those million people would be fodder for the type of destruction the US military can bring to bare. Our navy alone could smash them to bits while sitting well out of range of their missiles. The initial strikes would ground their air force and take out all known missile sites. Their Navy would be an easy target as well.
Our ability to destroy is only limited by our own willingness to do so.

(99,710 posts)I believe we can stop Iran from waging war by destroying their means to do so at very low cost but then what? If Iraq is the template the then what is not at all appealing. It's easy to break things. It's hard to put them back together.

(31,261 posts)battlefield. Our military took out the Taliban and Saddam militaries in a few days of fighting, calm ensued, then our troops started dying from asymmetric warfare attacks. In a war of attrition, it doesn't matter if we kill 1 million Iranians, what will defeat us is roadside bombs and other warfare that run up our casualty count.
It is hard to fight someone that kills some of our troops then melts into the general population of their country or province, Iraq and Afghanistan should have taught us abundant lessons in that regard.
My impulse would be to just leave the region, but that would be wrong because we have been there, so anything that happens will be blamed on us and all sides will have blood hatred for us. The Middleeast is a pot that is boiling with ancient hatreds, there is no way that an outsider can aggressively insert itself there like we have and not suffer consequences. China seems to be taking a smarter route, using soft diplomacy economic in places that are hotspots for us. China gets control of vast natural resources and we get people swearing on their kids lives to kill us wherever they find us.

(3,585 posts)without us having to involve ground troops, the rulers of Iran are not in a completely secure position of control over their population.
Blue_true
(31,261 posts)the country's rulers on our side.
The problem in regions of the world like the Middleeast is that people aren't going to fight our troops straight up, we have seen enough to know that. They will go after our soft targets in the region, or if we put troops in harm's way, they will use IEDs, which have been and still are highly effective against US troops that don't have loyal local fighters like the Kurds were for us in Syria and northern Iraq.

(3,585 posts)for their little terrorist operations and their terror mastermind is already dead.
Iran is extremely vulnerable.
Blue_true
(31,261 posts)How often have the US killed a high level terrorist and things calmed down? The closest was the killing of bin laden, but ISIS took over.
The thing that bothers me is that it seem that Shia jihadists and Sunni jihadists are attacking us, the group in Kenya that killed two Americans after the Iranian was killed are aligned with al quida, not Shia extremists.
I don't have your confidence that our superior military will win in the end, we were stronger by far in Korea, Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan and either have a stalemate, or exited, or are looking for the exit (Afghanistan).
