On July 3, 1988 the US Navy used missiles to shoot down an Iranian passenger jet

I have zero idea if what just happened in Iran is American related but what happened in 88 says a lot about our relations with Iran over the years:

One of the news magazine shows did a piece on it sometime after it happened, and I remember the young soldiers seeing the debris, clearly civilian luggage, floating by. They looked so stunned, it was clear they had no idea what they had shot down. I never felt that this story got enough examination.

Iran at that time was the bad boy of the ME. Even worse than Saddam. When Iran went to the international community with their grievance, they were given the cold shoulder.

Ironic. Trump is now the bad boy and our former allies are not on his side.
