Before jumping to the conclusion that "we" must have caused it as retaliation, consider that Iranian media would happily blame us if they wanted to, and they're not.

I don't understand where you are getting that (that some are suggesting WE, i.e., US is responsible) from?

(20,629 posts)see a single thing last night even remotely suggesting that we were to blame. I certainly saw speculation (understandably) that the plane may have been struck by one of the missiles launched by Iran that had somehow flown off course and out of control.

(18,770 posts)Think about it. Iran just chucked missiles at the US and were on high alert, waiting for a retaliatory strike. Their AA batteries were manned... and likely anxious.
Aircraft engines do catch fire from time to time, but the vast majority make it back to the airport on one engine.
Couple this with flight tracker data that lost the aircraft at 8000'.
Iran has a motive to deny this, obviously. We won't know until an independent aviation body can investigate.

(21,485 posts)circumstances of being on high alert, Iranians might have overreacted and shot down their own plane.
WaPo reported that it went through a regular maintenance check on Monday, was only 3 years old, and was purchased new. Engine failure is still possible, of course, but so is an accidental shoot down. The region is .considered too dangerous for overflights because of that kind of risk so that the US and several other nations have halted flights in the area.
