Federal Judge Invites Scammed Students to Propose Additional Punishments for Betsy DeVos

The courts have had it up to here with Department of Education (DOE) Secretary Betsy DeVos and her agency’s repeat—and apparently ongoing—violation of court orders that require her to stop milking scammed college students for student loan repayments. And now, it’s the students’ turn to potentially bring some pain.

In a terse and harsh two-page filing on Tuesday, U.S. Magistrate Judge Sallie Kim called out DeVos for her unlawful efforts to extract those payments from the student victims—who are plaintiffs in a class action lawsuit against the DOE over those illegal actions taken to force and coerce federal remuneration.

Judge Kim noted:

The compliance reports filed by [DeVos and the DOE] have introduced new material facts that are directly relevant to the amount of sanctions appropriate to compensate for [DeVos and the DOE’s] flagrant and continuing violation of the preliminary injunction.

That injunction was issued in May 2018 and barred DeVos from collecting student loan debt payments from a huge class of borrowers who were scammed by for-profit scammers Corinthian Colleges. DeVos and the DOE were initially dinged by the court–and DeVos herself was held in contempt–after admittedly violating that court order by forcing some 16,000 former students to pay back their loans.

The Department's continued flouting of the judge's orders isn't happening by accident.

But that’s probably not a legally valid way of counting contempt.

There is a very strange reticence to locking up rich people. Lock her up until her department complies with the judge’s order. She wouldn’t last a day.

Rich people have extremely pampered lives that most people can’t fathom. Being deprived of liberty is one thing but the loss of status and power really hurts. Outside they can order anyone they come in contact with around. Locked up everyone tells them what to do.

We don’t need imaginative punishments. We just have to treat rich criminals no differently than poor criminals. That’s also the best way to get prison reforms.

The thing I've always wondered is how some of these people can dress themselves they seems so stupid. Yet, somehow she became a billionaire. A parasite.

From Trump on down, everyone in his administration is driven by personal corruption and doing everything they can to screw citizens out of their last dollars. I hope the judge sends DeVos to jail for a few months—no cash bail allowed.

She can get called in for turnaround shifts, jump when there's a customer, get shit from customers, co-workers and employers. Get paid minimum wage. Wash the same outfit over and over. Clean up after everybody. Come home, hair smelling like chicken fat & too tired to take a shower.

If I'd ever been ripped off by herself personally, this sounds like something I'd recommend.

All the misery she's caused. Almost 50,000 young people extorted by this harpy. And for now they may increase a
$100,000 fine that the DOE will be paying.

One of the first orders of business for a Democratically appointed Attorney General in 2021 should be locking up this heartless creature for the rest of her life.

The breadth of this woman's cruelty and greed just staggers me.

I suggest a three part punishment.

First, RICO her and her Amway-heir husband into the poorhouse. If she’s not living in a van down by the river when all is said and done, try harder.

Next, force her to attend (at full fare) a for-profit college.

Finally, make her live in San Francisco and drive for a weed delivery service while trying to pay off her loans.
