Part of estate planning is being able to correctly spend down your assets so you can qualify for Medicare when you retire.

So basically we are saying you have to die poor, period. If you aren't poor we'll take your assets until you are poor to pay for your late life care.

It's one reason why our system is so broken. You think you're doing everything right? Maybe you are totally living responsibly, building your retirement up. Well, when you get old, it doesn't matter how much you've saved, you won't be able to afford a good retirement assisted living facilities for very long. Think you're retiring with $2 Million, sounds great, well that $2 Million can get eaten up in a couple years if you and your spouse need to move into an assisted living home.

The system is so broken and those that think they'll be immune from it when they retire will be its biggest victims. They'll take every penny and then you'll end up in the same place that the poor people are sent to die in.

When you think that the wealthy are able to transfer their wealth to their offspring and "keep it in the family" and that even the estate taxes have been chipped away so that more of it can be retained and passed on, that's also alarming.

On the other hand, any wealth that might have been accrued by a family of lessor means, (oh, maybe a paid for house, some land or a small chunk of money, etc.) no matter how paltry is extremely vulnerable to the hunger of this capitalistic health profit bonanza machine and can literally wipe that family and any heirs out, passing nothing on.

This actually happened in the 50s to my family just before I was born. My Grandmother suffered and wasted away with cancer for ten years. During that time, my Grandfather, (who was intelligent, but not wealthy) had to sell his assets, (a home, savings and one apartment building) that he was trying to build on soundly. Finally, he was left with trying to get a loan, (debt) to cover it and oddly, the hospital said it was better for her to be allowed to die at that point. My family was wiped out and I was born into that and they never really recovered. My Grandfather was doing the right thing and an illness blew that to pieces, but the hospital was paid.

So, what kind of capitalism is this when you see that gross discrepancy in outcomes and tragic results that many people never recover from even if they beat an illness? The stress and dejection from that is not good for your health, either.
