By "it", I mean the impeachment trial in the US Senate.
They should call as many witnesses as necessary. It is important for our country and our history that we get a complete record of what happened in Ukraine? And why?
The Republicans, led by McConnell, are looking for a a quick exit route. They don't want any new evidence and they don't want any witnesses. They would prefer to take what is in the House Articles and quickly dispense with the whole mess.
That would be the wrong thing to do. Since an impeachment in the House is similar to an indictment, that is not the end of the story. The Senate, which is more like a jury trial, has a responsibility to take the evidence from the House and get to the bottom of the story, with witnesses and documents.
That is the only fair way to do it.
It would be a great disservice if the Senate chose to sweep this under the rug and cover it up.
