1. I wonder if Hyde might turn out to have an actual mental illness, but is

either self-medicating it with alcohol or using being drunk as a cover, since some people, sadly, are more ashamed of having a mental illness than of being drunk. I had a neighbor who suffered from schizophrenia but would frequently go off his medications. Until I knew about his diagnosis, I thought maybe he was using alcohol or drugs.

There are degrees of severity with personality disorders and most people that have them can recognize reality, function well enough to keep themselves alive and don't commit violence.

Schizophrenia is a severe disorder where the person can experience psychosis if unmedicated.

Most people with other personality disorders just do stupid shit and fuck up their lives and lives of people around them.
