Since there is no legal requirement to swear on a bible, (you can swear on another book or an affirmation) I think that also applies to swearing in for Senators. For those who are aware of this, it is a choice, not an obligation.

To me that is good since it puts the emphasis on the person who is being sworn in or to an oath rather than the bible itself. While it is traditional, (and there for might even be suspect to those who place emphasis on bibles) it is optional.

It's only a question of if you have the belief that physical contact with a Bible is the one thing that will get you sent to hell for subsequent lying.
