Whatever you may think of Glenn Greenwald, no journalist should be subjected to persecution

for speaking truth to power.

https://www.commondreams.org/news/2020/01/21/we-will-not-be-intimidated-journalist-glenn-greenwald-defiant-after-being-charged

"Journalist Glenn Greenwald hit back after being charged with cybercrimes by Brazilian authorities Tuesday in connection to his reporting on corruption in the country, saying he would fight to defend the right to a free press and his right to report the truth.

"We are going to defend a free press," Greenwald tweeted in Portugese. "We will not be intimidated by the abuse of the state apparatus or by the Bolsonaro government."

The move to charge Greenwald by the right-wing government of President Jair Bolsonaro was quickly and forcefully condemned by progressives and journalists around the world.

"This is beyond disturbing," said Trevor Timm, executive director of the Freedom of the Press Foundation."

If he and his husband insist on staying in Brazil, their lives will be in real danger.

The Bolsonazi regime's policy toward its opponents is arbitrary detention - or, as the late Marielle Franco could attest, outright murder.

While Greenwald's and Miranda's high profiles have kept them safe up to now, they remain "accidents" waiting to happen so long as the current regime is in power (3 more years at least).

Sometimes you have to live to fight another day.

I know that he is somebody you allot some kind of authenticity to (as opposed to "admire" or "look up to&quot , and I'll admit that my not doing so is based on ignorance (I've only read snippets of a couple of his articles) and partisanship since he gigs my Dems as often as the Repukes. If he's all about freedom of the press and access to information, fine. I didn't like how SNOWDEN has ended up even if he exposed infractions of our freedoms, therefore, didn't like GREENWALD's role with him.

But my purpose here is to acknowledge your fellow's being hounded by whoever the despot is.

And that defense didn't work for Assange, either because HACKING IS NOT JOURNALISM!

This kind of gullibility among the left is precisely what Greenwald has been banking on his entire career... I've been trying to wise up DU to the Greenwald fraud for six years and still some of y'all are hellbent on being played for suckers.

Greenwald deserves the SAME endless hatred and vitriol he'd give any "mainstream beltway lapdog stenographer" journalist caught in an ethical lapse. If you truly believe in journalism, then he deserves nothing less....

Trashing Democrats, pushing Russian, Wikileaks and Snowden stuff, and now experiencing fascism first hand.
