Hair discrimination! I apologze to all my black friends on DU, but I never heard of anyone forced to "go home" if they didn't change their hair style.

"Legislation filed last week would make it illegal in Georgia for schools or businesses to practice what theyre calling hair-based discrimination.
Our hair is an expression of who we are and conforming is almost no longer the norm, said legislation sponsor state Sen. Tonya Anderson, a Lithonia Democrat.
Senate Bill 286 addresses what is considered professional at work, school or when seeking housing and bans the institutions from discriminating based on how hair is styled."
Apparently this occurs not only here in Ga. but in other States too.

(62,444 posts)Having white people in charge of how everyone's hair "is supposed to look" turns out not to be a popular idea among people whose hair differs from that of white people.
Who would have imagined that white people are not the best persons to decide how everyone's hair is supposed to look, eh?

(62,444 posts)Is how well certain types of non-mainstream denominations do. Assembly of God, JW's, Seventh Day Adventist, etc., which are sort of out of the mainstream in the US where they originated, and kind of borderline cultish, grow like weeds in the Caribbean.

I'll never forget a young man who was part of a community sports club where I was active. One day I saw him riding around with the Mormons. Now I knew this kid before he could walk so a few days later I asked him what it was about - he said Auntie you really think I believe any of their crap. He said he had a simple plan - two free degrees from Brigham Young and then he was returning home and getting on with his life.
And yes his plan worked He's a big man with his own family now and has nothing to do with any religion or church.
Our societies are full of parasites- foreign and local - and people learn fast how to use one another,

(7,820 posts)I mean, its obviously not really about the hair... and it may be a convenient fig leaf for schools and businesses who know saying theyre discriminating against someone based on race isnt acceptable, but prejudice against natural hair on African Americans (particularly women) and pressure to make it look less ethnic is absolutely a thing, and has been for a long time.

And it's not just black hair:
From 2010 - re Native American males and long hair: http://nativeamericannetroots.net/diary/601
And it's not just school - there are a fair number of business policies regarding black women's hair, as well.
And - you know, of course, it isn't really hair that is being discriminated against . . .
