One for the NYT Ethicist. Republican dilemma..

Republicans senatorial choices:

A. Do what is morally right and convict Trump because he deserves removal to the nth degree.

or

B. Realize that if you vote to convict, you are pretty much acquiescing that your opposition will win the WH and you will lose power since Pence can not win the WH. Your chances of promoting conservatism are vastly diminished.

Except you should have put "conservatism" in quotes, because these idiots are anything but conservative.

Your post is excellent - and it shows that they will certainly make the choice of Door Number Two - expediency over morality.

On Edit: Now that you mention it Laurapourmeadrink, I think I will go pour me a drink!

Realize that if you vote to acquit - you are pretty much acquiescing Congressional powers to the WH. Recognizing that more information will come out about what Trump has done already And that POTUS will do more and worse after being acquitted. In addition, based on his actions to date there is no guarantee of a free and fair election in 2020. To be honest, POTUS might say, why have an election.
