(53,410 posts)That view is so cool!
Having drones makes total sense for watching for fires! Especially on the sides of the mountains that are facing away from you. It looks like theres a lot of those.
Also, what do you do for bears and mountain lions and wolves? I know theyll all tend to avoid you, but just in case.

(8,807 posts)I live on a NF inholding and there were 10 plus lookouts local (several RDs) then and none remain now. Most have been removed including some fine installations built by CCC in 30s.
Jack Kerouac spent time manning a USFS lookout.

(182,861 posts)Looks really nice. I took an aptitude test (the ASVAB I think) and one of the results was fire watcher.

(25,400 posts)An old codger staffed a fire lookout in the Idaho wilderness. It was a pack-in, with mules. He hated people. One day he was scanning an area, with binocs, and caught movement on a side trail. Two hikers.
"Goddamit," he said. "A crowd."

(86,736 posts)I've flown over it in a small aircraft one summer when I worked in the FCWRNR years ago. Amazing place! There's been a lot of beetle kill the past decade so you could be busy. We haven't had much snow up on this end of the Rockies and not all that cold. If it doesn't rain all spring and summer, we're gonna burn all summer long.
Can't wait for the wonderful pictures!
