(10,435 posts)to consider Rmoney as "decent". He's still RMONEY. Just as bad as he was in 2012. He just doesn't like MF45, never did, and apparently Putin doesn't have anything on him.
It's not like his vote will be the one to actually convict. I think he's just doing it because he hates MF45 and is reminded every day how MF45 dangled a cabinet position in front of him, then told him to f***off.

(1,160 posts)For the first two years, I kept wondering when I'd come out of the coma I was obviously in. Now, the numbness of it being real is starting to set in, but still I often wonder if I am in some sort or brain-fevered purgatory, a place of my own masochistic making.
I want to scream at my republican coworkers, "Are you blind? Are you a pod person? How can you not see that this thing is a corrupt lump squatting in the White House???"
I am embarrassed for my country and afraid of my countrymen.

Senator Romney,
I did not vote for you for President in 2012. I would not vote for you again were you to run again. We are too far apart on many issues that are important to me. But after today and the news that you alone among Republicans are actually voting to hold Donald Trump accountable for abuse of office I must say that I would feel far more comfortable with you sitting in the Oval Office than the current resident. Thank you for standing up for what's right despite the fact that so many of your colleagues continue to defer to this evil man. We owe you a debt greater than I think you can see at this time.

(4,484 posts)he made the hard choice because he believed it was the right choice.
He was willing to ruin his life and, possibly, his political future to stand on his principles.
That is what a public servant does. They serve the public, not themselves.
I'm a gay man, someone to which Romney wanted to marriage, but I also respect the hell out of that kind of conviction and courage.
From a gay man: Thank you Mitt Romney. I appreciate you, and what you have done for our democracy today.

(3,283 posts)I appreciate that he has conscience enough to vote for conviction. I also appreciate that he is (according to CNN) the first Senator in US history to vote to convict a president of the same party. He has broken the narrative that the impeachment is strictly the Democrats, and he has made it bipartisan.
Also, there is a certain cachet behind "Former Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney (R-UT) votes to convict."
I still think he's (on the balance) a pretty awful person, but congratulations on doing the bare minimum.

A mensch is a someone to admire and emulate, someone of noble character. The key to being "a real mensch" is nothing less than character, rectitude, dignity, a sense of what is right, responsible, decorous. (Rosten, Leo. 1968. The Joys of Yiddish. New York: Pocket Books. 237)
