There might be those among who show kindness, sure. There might be those who know empathy, conscientiousness and compassion. They take to heart the values we're ostensibly taught as youngsters.
But as a whole? No way. No how.
It has nothing to do with the number of parents under a roof or religiosity. Quite the opposite, in fact.
You see a truly "decent" person could have never agreed to give power to a man who did this:
A "decent" person, regardless of political leanings, would have been so disgusted by such a repulsive display they would have worked against someone like that. Their inner compass would have shown them what a person like that is capable of and their blood would have run cold at the thought of that candidate in power, at the things they would do, at the effect they would have on society and the culture.
And anyone who claimed to be a devout Christian wouldn't have thought twice about rejecting such behavior.
But that's not what our nation has done. Too many of us have been energized by this behavior, have cheered on the coarsening of public discourse and lowering of expectations. Too many didn't care about mocking the physically disabled.
We've laid bare how low we are.

Well, that flimsy excuse doesn't work with Trump's mockery of the disabled.
