(25,473 posts)Despite all his faults (and there are many), I have to give him credit for taking a stand.
Romney also knows his audience and is always running for president, even when he's not. There was probably some of that understanding thrown into the calculation, though it's still a pretty big political risk and will certainly make him a Trump target.

(99,711 posts)He would get < 5% of the vote against a Trumpist candidate for president. The Republicans are as much Trump's party as the Communist party of the Soviet Union was Stalin's. It was a remarkable act of physical and moral bravery. I wouldn't put it past Trump and his minions to harm him and his family.

(25,473 posts)I think he's hoping that the Trump tide will eventually turn similar to what happened to George W. Bush by the end. W's approval ratings were in the 20s, as I recall. The only way I see that happening is if there's a massive backlash against the GOP and they take massive losses in 2020 and 2022 (after Trump is gone, we all hope) and they take Trump and all of his acolytes down with them (I don't think the opposite is going to happen, as likely as it's always seemed).
Personally, I don't see a massive shift happening in the party even if it crashes and burns (I think they'd just double down and hope the fickle public allows them back in), but I think that's what Romney almost has to be shooting for and might be trying to start. Before he ran for president, he really was the closest thing the Rs had to a moderate (he ran further right for president, of course).

(1,855 posts)Id say hes got his eye on McConnells job.
I think his convictions are genuine with respect to his faith, and that he cast the die now, thinking that when all of this implodes on what passes for the republican party these days, this positions him to be in the right place at the right time, with the leverage he needs to take that position of power that he wants.
Hes overestimated the chance that any of his compatriots have a shred of honor left, Im afraid, so while this may put him in place to rejuvenate the new neo-conservative party that will rise from the ashes of this burning pile of garbage, any of his peers that make it that new party will treat him as a pariah still.
And yeah, trumps dollar machine will spend big time to primary him with some more palatable flunkie. Oddly enough, Id say this sounds like just the time for that human incarnation of coffee breath Jason Chaffetz to decide it would be a good time to re-enter politics. Trump knows a lickspittle when he sees one, thats sure enough, and he wouldnt have to spend more than a glance on Jason to want to claim him.

I still think Andy McCabe is first.

Just like that.
Homeland Security has suspended global entry for all residents of the state of New York on the pretext of the sanctuary law in that state not allowing background checks for anyonewhich it doesnt do.
Just like that.
There will be more; lots more.

(32,626 posts)The Treasury Department has handed over documents to a pair of GOP Senate chairmen as part of a months-long probe into Burisma Holdings, Ukraine and Hunter Biden, according to the top Democrat on one of the panels.
Sens. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) and Ron Johnson (R-Wis.) the chairmen of the Finance and the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs committees, respectively sent a letter to the Treasury Department in November saying they were investigating "potentially improper actions" during the Obama administration.
The Treasury Department is complying with their request, according to a spokeswoman for Sen. Ron Wyden (Ore.), the top Democrat on the Finance Committee, who noted that Democratic requests for information have been stonewalled.

Utah lawmaker seeks to censure Sen. Mitt Romney after vote to convict President Trump
U.S. senator visits with Utah House, Senate leaders
By Lisa Riley Roche and Katie McKellar Updated Feb 6, 2020, 3:00pm MST
SALT LAKE CITY A state representative called Thursday for U.S. Sen. Mitt Romney to be censured for his vote to convict President Donald Trump for abuse of power, the same day Romney came to Utahs Capitol to meet privately with Republicans leaders of the Legislature to explain his action.
The censure resolution pairs with a bill filed last week that would give Utah voters the ability to recall their U.S. senators that is attracting even more attention now that Romney broke with his party. Utah House Speaker Brad Wilson, R-Kaysville, also filed a resolution paying tribute to Trump.

He's coming after any opponent and anyone who doesn't blindly support him.
He's above the law now. There is nothing that can stop him.
For those of you saying Nov 2020 ... you're assuming a legit election - which is won't be since Trump's survival is on the line and there is no impediment to stop him.
