do you think the Retrumplicans would stand up to him?
That's an actual serious question in today's 'Murika.
Hell, the media would just describe it as "Donnie Shit for Brains is just not like a normal politician"

(1,665 posts)Nope they would not.
No way. No how.
They would love him for it.
There are no principles among them.
They are just as bad as MF45. Each and every one.
They would have their little excuses, supported by the official propaganda network and cheer it on. This week we saw the absolute beginning of the They came for the... poem I 100% believe.

(3,579 posts)How does one remains friends with the Trump supporters.
Their values, beliefs and what they believe in and support is so different.
Every time a line is crossed by the clown, they redraw the line further right and say, next time, next time. And yet, we try to maintain peace, not offend them with the truth.
So, I have wondered, when Trump and the GOP decide to move additional people to camps - will that be enough, but then I look at the children that they have thrown in camps and taken away from their parents - and silence from the right.
Well, maybe when Trump decides that the enemies of the nation (Democrats) are worthy of killing - then will that be the line that makes 43% of the population say enough, or will they say - its not us, its them, others. And draw another line in the sand. And I wonder, will then will we not say anything for fear of offending them, hurting their feelings, and keeping peace in the family? I wonder, where is the line for all of us?

(12,712 posts)We may be getting closer and closer to finding out where that line is and it will be more obvious. This has a historical flavor to it, only American-style. We always have our own brands names.
To me, the thing is that not everybody who is playing along with this game on the other side realize the rules being imposed or the gravity of the situation. I don't even expect them to, yet. There are a handful of other issues, (and deep, often insidious, psychological needs projected) that bring them under the Fascist tent, (and yes, it is Fascism without a doubt now). So, how could they even imagine what they will be asked to accept under the rule of a Clown Dictator who acts his way through a power grab?
No, if it does go that far then they would be so deep into it that, progressively, step-by-step, they will be taken all the way into a deep, dark tunnel of tyranny where the suffering and deaths of their fellow Americans would be as meaningless to them as the abuses of animals in factory farming. And even if they did contemplate it, their shame and lack of a sense of responsibility would snap them out of it.
As morbid as it seems, this is a good time to consider the potential outcomes of the continuity of a Trump regime. If we can extrapolate the real potential, then that will fuel any and all efforts to prevent a horrible outcome before we come to it. When it goes from that old cliche, it can't happen here, to IT IS HAPPENING HERE, that's when the klaxons and sirens of freedom will flash and ring out loudly.

(5,586 posts)If he starts rounding us up, I don't think there's any way that would be tolerated. Internment camps for US citizens will never, ever happen, and anyone who says it can is really just gaslighting everyone.
There were 65 million Democrats that voted in 2016. There's simply no way they could intern or arrest that many people and still be able maintain the veneer of free society that we have today, and have had for the last 100 years.
Now if a Democrat shoots someone, robs a bank, drives drunk, or burns down a building, then that person will have to answer for their alleged actions.

(15,351 posts)Do the majority of Russians support Putin, or are they just too scared or numb to resist.
That's what worries me. It's not the 40% or so, it's the rest of us becoming numb to it.
It's not the fascism and gaslighting, it's the numbness and normalizing.

(26,630 posts)That would be Khmer Rouge level insanity, and I just don't see it going that far.
On the other hand, I could easily see them begin arresting and holding sham show trials for some of the more prominent Democratic party officials such as Pelosi and Schiff, and other public figures such as journalists (enemies of the people), satirists, and others who speak up.
It wouldn't take a lot to have the rest of us too terrified to meaningfully resist.
I don't see that as being such a far off scenario.

Some of them would enthusiastically support it, obviously, but I don't think it would be a majority.

Weird times we're in when this is being 'discussed' - and used to thing "W" was the worst president I'd ever see in my life.....

,is blood chilling.
Most Americans think it's impossible. My little town has many Trumpists even among people you wouldn't think would be.It was staunchly Republican however blue votes have been coming in.A while ago a Democratic Black Gay mayor was elected. The police & council members refuse to work with him. He's keeping a low profile these days. He fears for his life. You do not put Democratic or anti Trump stickers on your car. I've had stuff thrown at me and threats for wearing a March For Our Lives sweatshirt.
The town is slowly becoming more liberal but the ones who oppose that are not afraid to be violent.

(2,059 posts)and it's when not if. They don't see us as an opposition party; they see us as enemies. Trump sees himself as "the state". Soon we will be labeled as "enemies of the state". His followers are already calling for blood and he whips them further into a frenzy every chance he gets. Some pukes in congress will cheer, while the others will sit by quietly and watch as it happens, grateful there is an R next to their name and careful not to do anything to upset the Führer lest they become targets as well. Media will play bothsidesism and squeal in delight of the ratings.
