The Sad Saga of Sondland

He bought an ambassadorship for a cool million, apparently convinced that a substantial contribution to Donald’s inaugural fund would curry favour – and it paid off.

He thought being asked to participate in his “pResident’s” secret mission to shake down Zelensky was a sign that he was valued and trusted, and had secured a position among Trump’s inner circle.

He basked in the idea that he could phone the “pResident” at any time, and would be responded to immediately – as befitting a man whom Trump held in high esteem.

And then he told the truth – albeit reluctantly, having been caught between the loyalty he had to maintain to stay in Trump’s good graces and the threat of perjury hanging over his head as other witnesses came forward with the truthful version of events.

And where is Sondland now? Packing his belongings into cardboard boxes, as he comes to the realization that he was just another disposable dupe – not an easy task when you’ve got a knife sticking out of your back.

The Saga of Sondland should be a cautionary tale for all Republicans who think their money can buy them immunity from Trump’s insane whims, or who believe they are untouchable by virtue of past displays of loyalty.

Whether it’s by having your ass kicked out by Trump, or being ousted from office by the voters, the fact remains that when it comes to Trump’s GOP lackies, no one will get out alive.

The fact that so many of them don't see it coming is just icing on the cake.

I keep picturing Sondland sputtering furiously as he was told he was out - grabbing his phone and dialing his best bud Donny, only to be advised that the "pResident" was permanently unavailable to take his calls.

Hello, Stephen Miller here. Hello, hello, hello. I can't hear you. You have to speak louder. Hello, hello. You'll have to call back. We have a bad connection.

That million could have bought a lot of health care and housing for people who don't have it. Or food for people who are losing their food stamps. But it went into Donald Trump's pockets instead.

It looks so irretrievably stupid now, with the damn tapes and Sondland looking an absolute goddamn fool in multiple venues.

But that's a good lesson for the next fool who thinks he's gonna get something out of Trump. Deals with Trump are ALWAYS cons. ALWAYS. Sondland learned the hard way. If he wanted his European sinecure, he'd have to play the Rudy game. And so he came to ruin. Who wants to be the next to step up for that program? The next fool.

he's a physically unprepossessing man, of ordinary intelligence and a desperate, tragic need to please.

Those are the 'best' people with whom Trump has staffed his administration. Sondland is a stooped man with narrow shoulders and average skills. Sondland is aware of that.

Weaselly Sondland turned out to have a conscience, but only after he was caught.
