Oh, we may know enough to be unmoved by the billion-dollar blitzkrieg of Trump propaganda coming online and through the media, but there are voters, (independent, swing and otherwise) who are not immune to this and intelligence is not the only factor involved and it is possible to be intelligent, but a bit too confident about it and that's a flaw that is utilized to sway people. Even cults have the means to break down rather intelligent people by utilizing their logical rejections of the information.
That is why I highly recommend that, if you are serious about defeating trump, you immerse yourselves in a little more study and investigation into the manipulation of the masses. We are going to see old and new techniques being fired in salvos at our democracy this time. Being able to recognize the how and why of it is the power of knowledge and so, it is just as important as be politically active and voting.
The techniques utilized are going to be both old and new, highly updated and specialized forms of propaganda that represent knowledge and skills that average people are often unaware of, but are exposed to all the time, which is a part of how it works: subtle, emotive, catchy, repetitive, etc. Having a "cyber-shield" is going to be crucial, but not just for us. As I mentioned, your part is how you are a source of what is more factual and precise when it comes to clearing the fog of war. Collectively, that will provide a countervailing force in small ways here and there that add up.
I hope we will be focusing more and more about these subjects and giving them due attention in order to prepare and respond to the barrage of deflection and deception that is already getting traction. The video in this link can be an eye opener for many people, I promise. Pay heed. What you will learn is that the overall ideas are the foundation of how this works and the rest has been the fine-tuning and updating based on research and past results.
Absorbing this kind of information is almost like a civic duty these days and you will see why.
Before Chomsky, there was Lippmann: the First World War and manufactured consent
While the manufacture of consent is an idea now mostly associated with Noam Chomsky, the phrase was actually coined by the US journalist and writer Walter Lippman in his influential book Public Opinion (1922) a fact that Chomsky and Edward S Herman, his co-author of Manufacturing Consent (1988), readily acknowledge. Lippman contended that, because the world is too complex for any individual to comprehend, a strong society needs people and institutions specialised in collecting data and creating the most accurate interpretations of reality possible. When used properly, this information should allow decisionmakers to manufacture consent in the public interest. However, in one of the most damning critiques of democracy, Lippman identifies how public opinion is instead largely forged by political elites with self-serving interests powerful people manipulating narratives to their own ends. This video essay from the YouTube channel Then & Now dives into Lippmans legacy, starting with his study of the rise of the importance of public opinion during the First World War, and extending through an examination of why, a century after Public Opinion, democracy still has a major mass-media problem.
