Vacationing in Chicago for the new year. Took the kids to see the fireworks at Riverwalk and there was the damn Trump tower. I was peeved, cussed a little, then turned my back to it the whole time and enjoyed the show.

17. Yeah. Putin is not popular in Russia.

He's only in charge because of two reasons:

1. The russian government is fighting any and all civil organizations that fight for transparency, against corruption, for freedom of the press for human rights and things like that. Russian laws are written in such a way that anyone associated with this kind of organizations can be arrested for anti-russian activities.

For example: Russia has not outlawed homosexual content in media. However, you may not show homosexual content anywhere where it might be seen by children... which effectively outlaws it anywhere anytime.

For example, about 2 years ago Russia passed a law that allows the Attorney-General to unilaterally disband any russian organization that receives foreign funding, without charges being filed, without trial in court, without any option for recourse.

Russia is all about ambiguously worded laws that give the pretense of law&order in theory but in practice allow the russian government to go full-on authoritarian.



2. With all the sane political opposition neutered, the only alternatives for the voters are political extremists and fame-hungry celebrities.

I have a russian colleague who hates Putin. And he says that if he lived in Russia he would vote for Putin anyways because everyone else who's allowed to run is way worse.
