Texas 2020 Hotlist: The most competitive races in this year's primaries

U.S. Senate
Most of these candidates have never been on a statewide ballot in Texas, and no one has really broken out. It's a race to get into the May runoff. The winner will then face Republican U.S. Sen. John Cornyn in the general election.

U.S. House District 12
U.S. Rep. Kay Granger, leaning hard on an endorsement from President Donald Trump, meets a serious challenge from the right.

U.S. House District 17
Former U.S. Rep. Pete Sessions is a defeated congressman from another district, TX-32, and the outgoing incumbent, Republican Bill Flores, endorsed Renee Swann.

U.S. House District 22
This is an open-seat race testing the strength of the Bush dynasty in Texas against a full-spectrum field that includes a wealthy self-funder, Kathaleen Wall, and Troy Nehls, the sheriff of the district's biggest county. The incumbent, Republican Pete Olson, isn't seeking reelection

U.S. House District 28
Henry Cuellar, a Democratic incumbent who sometimes sides with the GOP, faces a challenge from the left backed by national progressives.
