Another coronavirus-related death was reported outside of China this weekend.
An unidentified man in his 60s was first admitted to a hospital on Feb. 3 after he developed a cough a week earlier, Taiwan's Ministry of Health and Welfare said in a statement. He died from the virus on Saturday, and his remains will be reserved for further medical testing, according to the statement.
This death is the fourth reported coronavirus fatality to take place outside mainland China. France reported a coronavirus fatality Sunday and the World Health Organization (WHO) said Japan and the Philippines both recorded deaths. As of Sunday morning, China has 1,524 reported coronavirus fatalities and nearly 67,000 cases, the WHO said.
Health officials and businesses around the globe continued to contain the virus and treat any patient who may have contracted the disease. The first group of the 400 U.S. passengers aboard the Diamond Princess cruise ship, which has been docked at the port of Yokohama in Japan for quarantine since Feb. 3, were allowed to leave the boat Sunday morning.

(6,110 posts)which leads me to believe the people who were sick with the virus on the ship, were already infected before boarding the ship. My bet is they came from near Wuhan, China or came in close contact on the ship with someone already infected people.

(6,110 posts)to United States on chartered planes, so I am guessing none of the 400 are sick.
So the 40 Americans on ship who are sick with the virus, did any of them had recent connection to Wuhan region in China?

(6,110 posts)reason I am interested in news from the cruise ship is I am booked on a Caribbean cruise starting on Monday!
There are 300-400 cruise ships still cruising along, so hopefully the risk is small.

(5,008 posts)We are booked on a cruise for first week in June. I thought about canceling. However, no one on a ship here in the U.S. has tested positive. The cruise lines here are taking more precautions. Most are doing health screenings. Our cruise line (Royal Caribbean) is not allowing people with fever or low blood oximetry to board the ship. They are also not allowing anyone that has been to China (or exposed to anyone that has been to a China)to board the ship. So we plan to go and make sure we constantly wash hands and use sanitizer (we do that anyway..germaphobe here..lol). Personally I think we will pass on buffets. We will just eat in the main dining room.
Anyway, go on your cruise and HAVE FUN! 🛳

(6,110 posts)Yes! Definitely will stay away from buffet's haha where I am known to lurk a lot.
We are close to Cape Canaveral & JAX cruise terminals, so shop for last minute cruise bargains.
Last cruise of 5 days on Norwegian Sun in November 2019 was discounted to $119/pp for outside cabin!
Plus taxes & tip and parking of course. That ship was scheduled to visit Cuba which got cancelled and
they had to discount the prices down. We might splurge on the specialty dining room this time couple of
evenings if the main dining room is crowded. Those specialty dining are usually half empty.

Ms. Toad
(34,092 posts)They are released from the ship into a different quarantine.
For example, those taking the flight home will go to one of two quarantine sites.
Upon return to the U.S., those who choose to take the chartered flights will be quarantined at Travis Air Force Base in Fairfield, California or Lackland Air Force Base near San Antonio, Texas for 14 days.
(Not your fault the headline writers, among others, created inaccurate headline - but it's causing confusion in this thread, since it appears that they will go directly from a ship that is reporting new cases daily to potentially spreading the virus in the general population.)
