Iowa City, Ia. – As is true for the Hawkeye football team, it seems there are no fair-weather fans of President Barack Obama in Iowa City.
Thousands of University of Iowa students and Obama supporters of all ages huddled together under a burst of rain Friday afternoon on the campus’ central Pentacrest awaiting the president’s appearance here just a day after he accepted the Democratic Party’s presidential nomination at the national convention in Charlotte.
By the time he took the stage, though, the skies had cleared back to blue, and the crowd of 8,000 – many in ponchos and many more slightly soggy in black-and-gold cotton– let loose a great roar.
It was exactly the a show of dedication that Obama is banking on in Iowa City, and underscores his mission in returning to Iowa a day after the convention and within a week of his last visit to the state.
