Americas failure to guarantee paid sick leave for its workers could combine with the coronavirus to pose a serious danger to public health in the coming weeks.
The Covid-19 illness, caused by the coronavirus, is here and likely here to stay for a while. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are warning people to be prepared for major disruptions in their daily lives. That could mean staying home for days if they get sick.
But that is easier said than done for millions of American workers. Employees in the service industry especially, like food workers or personal care assistants, are much less likely than their peers in more lucrative fields to have paid time off if they get sick. But they also make less money in general, meaning a lost day of work hurts their families budgets more. That gives them a strong motivation to go into work even if theyre not feeling well.
And because these workers come in close contact with the rest of humanity, they are a potent vector for spreading contagions, particularly those as infectious as coronaviruses. Its a recipe for making a bad outbreak even worse, all because America hasnt decided to guarantee paid sick leave for all workers.

(102,292 posts)two weeks or more of food stockpiled and lots of savings or credit available on their credit cards, they may well not. Not to mention the uninsured. No health care, no food, quarantined at home and quite possibly with no one to check up on them.
We may well be headed for the ultimate reckoning.

It appears that asymptomatic people can spread the virus.
Shit be getting real.

Coronavirus makes clear what has been true all along. Your health is as safe as that of the worst-insured, worst-cared-for person in your society. It will be decided by the height of the floor, not the ceiling.

(17,549 posts)I worked for a large university. Even staff with sick leave on the books would come to work with fevers, dripping snot, moaning, coughing and sneezing. Others came to work sick as a dog because they had used up sick leave on Mondays and Fridays. The supervisors were not empowered to send them home no matter how sick they obviously were. The sick considered themselves heroes for coming to work miserable......I would catch nasty colds about four times a year. Since I have retired, I have not been sick a day......
If the virus gets out in a place like that you will need to fasten your seat belts because there will be turbulence ahead.
