and there are universities, pharma-labratories galore to be first and best.
The question will be who gets to meter the cure: the government like it did for polio and eventually did for HIV, or will it be in the hands of someone like this:

(33,643 posts)Given we really don't have a cure for the common cold, I doubt we'll ever have one for COVID-19.

(57,106 posts)cases of the diseases have fallen quite dramatically. Isn't that indicative of some degree of "cure"? You don't get cured of small pox, you survive it. And get immunity.

(57,106 posts)prevent HIV? I don't remember the name, but I am searching it.
Also I was meaning that HIV has seen individuals thought to be clear of any HIV, cured of HIV. Just clumsy typing on my part.

(33,643 posts)A cure is something that proactively fixes you when you're already sick and rids you of the sickness.
Antibiotics can cure bacterial infections for example.
Viruses OTOH get vaccines which hopefully eventually lead to eradication.
Very, very few viruses are 'cured' other than by the body itself. And even then a lot of them are just dormant.
I know I'm being pedantic, sorry but while there's likely to be a vaccine eventually, I think a cure is doubtful.

(5,111 posts)Diseases. What are you ever talking about. Theres no cure for the common cold and flu. Viruses are nearly impossible to cure...

(14,972 posts)but said cures do not exist at present. Likewise there's long been a market for a "universal" influenza vaccine, but it also does not exist.
I would not get too confident that the ultimate barrier is going to be cost/intellectual property. It may well be technical/logistical/scientific.
