if they took an oath of allegiance, and everyone wanted to let bygones be bygones, and so there was never a period when they were truly seen as traitors rather than brothers. And now that is catching up to us - with the realization that we are a nation roughly half-filled with traitors.

It's been 155 years since the civil war ended. One would think given so much time has passed and so many generations have come and gone, that we as a nation would have healed by now. Apparently not.

The frigate USS Merrimack had been building in naval shipyard in Virginia when it seceded. At that point, it and other ships were scuttled.

The scuttled Merrimack had enough left intact (including its steam engines) that the CS Navy raised it and extensively altered its design to be rebuilt as an ironclad, predictably named the CSS Virginia.

But it belongs in museums, alongside photos of African-Americans working as slaves, as a reminder of a bygone time with values we no longer approve of.

If you use it on your bumper, as a mark that you approve of those historic values, or wish to identify yourself to others with equal personal values, you are doing it wrong. Be a rebel in some other way.

Equivalent of driving around in Germany in a VW with a swastika sticker on the rear bumper.

“Possession of a Confederate flag tattoo is grounds for separation from the Marine Corps.”

Do the same thing they did with skinhead tattoos after James Burmeister murdered two black people: “Cover ‘em up or have ‘em lasered off, they have no place in our military.”
