A federal jury on Thursday convicted Greg Lindberg, a major Florida GOP donor, on public corruption and bribery charges in a scheme to influence a North Carolina insurance commissioner.
Lindberg, founder and chairman of Eli Global LLC and the owner of Global Bankers Insurance Group, was found guilty after a three-week trial in U.S. District court in Charlotte, N.C.
Lindberg emerged last year as one of Floridas largest individual Republican donors, giving to a range of officials and sending $350,000 to committees supporting then-Senate candidate Gov. Rick Scott. Lindberg and his companies also gave nearly $80,000 to Florida Chief Financial Officer Jimmy Patronis, whose office houses the Florida Office of Insurance Regulation, and nearly $230,000 to current or future House speakers and Senate presidents.
Lindbergs sudden interest in Florida politics coincided with increased scrutiny from Florida insurance regulators after years of wrangling with Lindberg companies.
