https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2020/03/06/gops-hunterghazi-strategy-is-coming-romney-cant-stop-it/#comments-wrapper<<snip>>
But there is one man standing in their way: Mitt Romney. Or not quite standing in their way so much as walking alongside and saying, Lets not go too far with this, fellas:
A day after threatening to withhold his vote, Sen. Mitt Romney signaled Friday that he will support a Republican effort to obtain documents and testimony relating to work done in Ukraine by the son of former vice president Joe Biden.
Romney (R-Utah) will vote for issuing a subpoena in the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee next week after receiving assurances from the panels chairman, Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.), that any interview of the witness would occur in a closed setting without a hearing or public spectacle, Romney spokeswoman Liz Johnson said in a statement.
Im perfectly willing to grant Romneys sincerity here. He did, after all, vote to remove President Trump from office, and he has said that Johnsons investigation has the appearance of being politically motivated, and that I would prefer that investigations are done by an independent, nonpolitical body.
Romneys apparent theory is that if you move this piece of testimony from someone who worked for a consulting firm that represented Burisma, on whose board Hunter Biden sat, in the United States behind closed doors, then itll no longer be a public spectacle and can just be a serious fact-finding enterprise.
But if Romney thinks keeping a hearing or two behind closed doors will turn this investigation from an effort to sabotage Bidens presidential bid into a serious attempt at oversight, he understands neither the dynamics of scandal nor the strategy Republicans are employing.

(2,947 posts)1. Romney's display of hypocrisy does not surprise me. I've felt all along that his one vote on
the impeachment was a revenge vote for trump humiliating him in his quest to be SOS. Remember, during the impeachment vote Romney voted in favor of trump being allowed to disobey congressional subpoenaes.

but it's way too late in the game for Romney have any doubt about what's going on. He's just another Republican trying to spiff up his image for his next run at the White House. The 47% are still here.

(15,950 posts)4. And I would suggest anyone receiving a subpoena to simply ignore it
Subpoenas are meaningless now a days. Thank you republicons for setting that precedence, we no longer have to show up. Plain and simple.

Remember how this game ACTUALLY WORKS just now
IOKIYAR.
If you're not, you clearly hate America and Donald Trump, are a criminal and a traitor, and so whatever happens to you therefore, is White Jesus' will (and judgement).
