Video conference allows the instructor to speak but online modules can as well.

I'm a professor (of history, not foreign languages). The tech is pretty amazing. I actually teach our department's graduate students how to teach online courses and since the university is creating contingency plans, I'm tasked with training my colleagues.

It is very seamless. It even has voice recognition technology that corrects your pronunciation.

A program called Canvas is widely used . Videos, workbook, tests are online proctored with computer webcam.
Probably more work than regular classes, the quality was excellent.

That was when schools taught students to read foreign languages, not to speak them
