Older 2 are in school so they could bring something home with them. Ive read that children rarely get sick with it (or only mildly) but can be carriers.

(9,498 posts)DH suggested we drive instead of fly (bought tix in Jan.) But even so there will be a large gathering at the wedding. Arghhh. Brides parents are also 60-something and coming from far away. Will have to make some serious decisions in the next few weeks.

(20,971 posts)She was planning a huge wedding in a castle in Ireland but we have not been invited and even if we were, we were not planning to attend.
Such shows of such affluence sicken both of us.
A wedding in an Irish Castle costs a fortune! I was told that a pat of butter costs at one of these events costs 3 EU! A slice of cake? 25 EU !!
Our wedding cost $45!

(9,498 posts)My son is not having a destination wedding, they both live and met in Florida. Were from Pennsylvania and her family from Ohio. She has an elderly grandmother who Im sure was planning on going too (80-ish but in good health). DH and I are waiting to see what they recommend in the next couple weeks before making any final decisions.

(35,152 posts)I've developed personal hygiene habits that have kept me almost entirely flu-free and about 50% cold-free for the past decade. I'm not staying home, but I'm ramping up those precautions (more frequent hand-washing, minimizing hand-shaking (and, if I can't avoid it, washing immediately after), more social distancing)
I'm also nagging my family more - since they both catch more things than I do.

(18,158 posts)Weve been washing our hands first thing when we get home for a few years, but remembering to not touch your face/rub your eyes is a tough one. Husband has respiratory issues and is 84, so after a quick errand today we will stay home.

(18,158 posts)I woke up with what was most likely allergies, but possibly could have been the beginning of a cold. The minute I got to the office I told the staff and didnt sign in. I asked them if I should stay. The receptionist checked with the hygienist and said I should stay. When the Dr came to the door I immediately suggested he put on his mask. He said nobody had ever warned him before and thanked me.

over 60 and take immunosuppressant drugs. I will get out to do things I need to do. Since I have been on these drugs for many years (one for 35 years) I never go into big crowds, I havent been to a movie for twenty years probably and dont go out to eat. Always get take out. Unfortunately my parents are in a nursing home, so I have to be careful if I go there for their sake and mine.

Debating whether I will go to my 55+ yoga class this afternoon. We are in a big room so our mats are pretty far apart and very little social interactions because its yoga.

(59,797 posts)We are following some of the CDC guidelines. We are washing our hands way more and are more aware of people around us. We did go to some events at our synagogue this weekend, but there are no positive cases in Northern VT.
I always have a large number of dried beans, flours, cereals, dried fruit, nuts, and grains in the pantry because I have always stocked up on them, bought vegetables from a CSA and then stopped at the closest store for other things needed for what I want to cook. When I last went to that store I bought 4 bags of frozen vegetables and a couple of tofu packages and frozen fish and more coffee. I already had chicken in the freezer from my CSA. I will keep things at this level until the threat is over. This easily meets the goal of being prepared to have good for 3 plus weeks.
If and likely when more cases happen here, we will stay home.

My wife and I are going to be breaking that suggestion pretty soon. Shes 66, Im 67. She just had a small stroke and hospital visits are in place also occupational therapy for her. Ok we can deal with those.
Im due for a hip replacement later in the month...truthfully Im getting a little worried. Michigan checks out ok in the amount of people infected. Im scheduled for the 26th of this month a lot can happen between now and then.

(4,550 posts)There's no good reason to go window shopping or even on a Sunday drive, even if my 18-year-old car has now been "fixed" though not reliably "tested" on the road. We live on the literal edge, and lately I've come to terms with wintertime cabin fever by doing the usual household stuff, reading, surfing the health docu-series and DU, binging TV, and messing with the pets. DH does most all of the "away from home" errands. The checks come in and go out lickety-split without a C-note to spare for "frivolous spending" thanks to decades of government and corporate greed. Got lots of pancake mix, flour, yeast and Kraft singles for grilled sandwiches in the larder, hahaha. Don't worry, I'm not salad-deprived either and have a giant bag of blackberries and a big bag of apples too. Just good planning and good luck! Just waiting for the March Madness checks to add another bag of frozen veggies for the next month. Yesterday, I wacked off an inch or two of my hair.
TPTB put the aerator back in the pond yesterday and trenched the tree beds yesterday, a welcoming sign of spring and incoming summer mulch. I'm so grateful that the winter weather hasn't been worse. Then we'll find the funds over several months to get the soil amendments, seeds, and seedlings for our north 40 inch garden - can't wait to get back into the sun, albeit, out the back door. Yes, things could be much worse or still go to much worse quickly, and I expect that eventually, in a myriad of unknown ways, but perhaps the large first wave of infection will have then passed by my little world.
Yup, my world is genuinely self-limited. It's not at all easy, and I marvel at all the well-funded travel to events around the city and the pay-for-leisure experiences around the globe that has brought "the bug" so close that a great many still need reminders to behave appropriately (wash hands), dress appropriately (tissues/hankies at hand and sequestered after use, maybe gloves/masks), or risk becoming quarantined home bodies like me. In the long view, the Plan B is working well; together, we're going to be very expensive to TPTB. Nothing good ever comes without sacrifice.

(4,555 posts)But 1/2 my family, including my husband and best friend work for a large university with a huge population of foreign exchange students and the other 1/2 work in healthcare. IMO its only a matter of time before they tell the university people not to come to work and the medical workers they can't leave. My odds aren't looking that great no matter what I do.

My county has cases of COVID-19. It's a damn large county. And the cases cluster, none from community transmission.
Low probability of running into somebody infectious.
I like how one public health wonk put it on the local news when asked whether a given public event should be cancelled. He said the average person was more likely to die in a car crash on the way to the event than to contract the novel coronavirus.

(17,757 posts)I am isolating as far as is practical. Hell, I even washed my hands for the first time in 55 years. I am retired and it is not at all difficult for me.
I fear for my wife who is three weeks from retirement. She has health issues, she works in a large office building in on a large office campus. I have pleaded with her to give it up and come on home. It would not be a financial burden...
My wife's character is such, that she told them a year ago, what day she was leaving, and she will not give an inch. She works for state government, and unless the Republican Governor tells old or vulnerable people to work from home, she will be there every day.
If she gets the virus, it will most likely kill her. If it kills her, it will kill me whether I get the virus or not. We have been a couple since she was 14 and I was 15......

(18,158 posts)I came out of retirement to work and live in NYC for a year. Loved it! Loved the Broadway shows and the wonderful vegan restaurants. Suffice it to say I didnt come home with any $, I left them all with your wonderful city. Ahh I lived one block from a Whole Foods in one direction and a Trader Joes one block in the direction. Across the street from a Food emporium grocery store and the subway. When I hit the lottery I will buy an apartment and live there part time 🙂

(7,813 posts)I normally wear nitrile gloves when I handle cash as it's commonly soaked in sweat and urine. Within two hours of beginning shift my fingertips will be yellow from the currency. Now we throw this virus into the mix and I'm using a institutional food service sanitizer that is ammonia based for wetting surfaces and my gloves as often as practical. It's specifically marked as effective against the last Coronavius strain (229E).
Don't be offended if I keep my distance from the counter.
