Edit: ... the replies in case it comes in your IN basket.
I think I was clear in my post that I didn't know what to think about this info that was e-mailed to (minimally) dozens of people. I came to DU to find out how I should interpret it. I got pretty consistent responses that it was not only inaccurate, but potentially harmful. I also got lots of advice to trash the post. That's a puzzle to me. I didn't know whether the info was reliable or not, so I went to find out. How can asking a question be wrong? I did find out (I think.) I tried to address this in this reply:
https://www.democraticunderground.com/100213076092#post6 , but apparently people who don't read the whole OP don't read replies either. Anyway. I have changed the subject as well. I am also e-mailing the four people who recommended the post.
End edit:
I got this message from a friend who got it from a friend who... It suggests that certain effects of COVID-19 may not be noticeable until too late and suggests steps to take. It doesn't sound like the steps could hurt.
Here is what my ICU physician daughter-in-law has to say about it.
"I don't know. Hydration always helps. The fibrosis part doesn't sound right. Initially it's inflammation (first 7 days) not fibrosis"
Are any of you DUers physicians or otherwise qualified to have an opinion about what's going on here?

Your physician daughter says it doesnt sound right.
Seriously, why?
Two medical professionals have basically said its bullshit. You are not sure what to think.

(34,074 posts)BUT - my daughter has a liver diseases that start with inflammation, then moves to fibrosis. Based on that experience, that part of the message is incorrect.
Once I find somethign easily disproven I pretty much discount the rest.

(18,312 posts)as to why this is incorrect and possibly deadly information
1) it's just junk science with no attribution to the author. "A Japanese Doctor." Oh, okay. Sounds legit (not)
2) COVID19 is known to be more serious when infecting the elderly with underlying health conditions such as those with comorbidities affecting the heart and lungs
* that would include Congestive Heart Failure
People with Congestive Heart Failure are often placed on fluid restrictions because their hearts cannot pump effectively, causing a build-up of fluid in the lungs, abdomen, and lower extremities.
Blithely telling someone to drink water every 15 minutes would be deadly to someone with a underlying condition that makes them prone to fluid overload. It's not just CHF, but that's the big one. Their pulmonary system is now even MORE compromised because of this bullshit, unattributed, non-tested bullshit junk science that you refuse to remove.
But hey, if they're dead, they're dead, right?
4) In all of my years in Critical Care, ICU, and ER, I have NEVER tested a patient's pulmonary health (nor have any of the cardiac, pulmonary, or interventional specialists that I have worked with in nearly 2 decades) by this hold-your-breath nonsense. People with fibrosis CAN hold their breath, and fibrosis is not a known sequalae of COVID19. This, again, is unfounded nonsense that is not supported by ANY peer-reviewed research regarding lung function, COVID19, or used in ANY setting (outside of someone who has no goddamned idea what they're talking about and want to sound smart) to prove ANYTHING other than how long you can hold your breath.
5) Hydration is important, but how much water? 1 cup? 1 tb? 1 gallon?Every 15 minutes for....ever? Every waking hour? In replacement of other fluids? Do you want water toxicity? because that's how you get water toxicity. Too much dilution (water) will cause a depletion of the body's essential electrolytes, specifically and most importantly, Sodium and Potassium. Again, these electrolytes are often always at risk of being out of whack in the elderly, infirm, and those with multiple comorbidities (heart dz, kidney dz, diabetes). Have you ever seen anyone with a sodium level of 110? I have. It's not pretty. It causes rapid deterioration and requires immediate hospitalization to reverse the (hopefully not permanent but often is) damage.
Once again, another part of this advice is actually deadly and in no way helpful.
Please. I work with these patients that are most susceptible to this literally deadly information. You are doing NOTHING to protect anyone and could be actually actively harming those at greatest risk of COVID19. Not from the virus (although you're telling them nothing that would prevent transmission or acquisition of the virus), but from other "treatments" that would cause exacerbation of serious health problems and cause serious injury and/or death.
What you have posted is irresponsible. "It doesn't sound like the steps could hurt?" Bullshit. THEY COULD KILL.
There is no source, no names, no citations.
This is garbage and you should be ashamed.

(13,783 posts)..message was sent to many people that I know about, and probably many more, I'm leaving it up so others who might have seen it can see all your persuasive responses. I didn't put it up to advocate for it. I put it up to get feedback, which I did. Thanks again.
