Coronavirus in WA - Revisiting this post

Last edited Thu Mar 19, 2020, 03:19 PM - Edit history (2)

So Washington is the furthest along in Coronavirus spread in the US, correct?

Shouldn’t they be experiencing some of the hospital overwhelm we are seeing in Italy by now? Or are they? I haven’t heard much about it if they are.

UPDATE - t’s been a week since I originally wondered about this and it doesn’t seem like WA hospitals are being crushed like we saw in Italy. I’m not saying things aren’t still bad, but perhaps their encouragement of social distancing was early enough to prevent an Italy-like scenario. Let’s hope that’s the case.

Is it possible that social distancing is helping?

Or are they still going to end up like Italy?

Trying to find any glimmers of hope here.

shut down the public schools, frankly. It could be that there are cultural differences between America and Italy that don't favor the virus as much here.

The hospital I work at, in Seattle is not “overwhelmed” but we are rationing isolation supplies in preparation of an event we hope doesn’t happen. Our governor has taken decisive steps to “flatten the curve”

Me? I just texted my 82 year old mother, telling her while I haven’t had a direct exposure, at the hospital it’s probably best I stay away for right now. It wasn’t until I hit “send” that I realized how fucked up all this is.

They aren't even in the same ballpark yet, though admittedly the population in the area affected in Italy is much larger.

I guess that’s what I’m wondering. How far behind Italy is WA?

Or have they managed to flatten the curve?

It takes a while before the effects of better practices show in the numbers, let's hope for the best.
