Jon Stewart: GOP playing ‘a**holes’ poker’ with Cordray appointment

On last night’s The Daily Show, Jon Stewart highlighted the media’s reaction to President Barack Obama’s decision to appoint former Ohio Attorney General Richard Cordray to head the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.

Obama appointed Cordray via recess ppointment, the same parliamentary procedure that George Bush used to appoint John Bolton as U.N. ambassador in 2004. Nonetheless, Republicans and conservative pundits are painting this executive maneuver as an unprecedented power grab, the likes of which the world has never seen.

Senior Political Correspondent John Oliver appeared in the second half of the segment, however, to point out that the Democrats used similar tactics to stall Bush administration nominees.

The consumer bureau was created two years ago by an act of Congress to protect consumers from abusive practices by banks, credit card companies, and other financial institutions. The president’s original pick to run the bureau was Elizabeth Warren, a Harvard economics professor who Republicans blocked as well. She’s now running for U.S. Senate against Sen. Scott Brown (R-MA).
