This is done by infecting cells grown in a dish and adding the chemical, then measuring the amount of virus in the cells. This can be done in huge quantities to test thousands of chemicals. Another possibility is that some existing, approved drugs will have activity against COVID-19 proteases, and they are probably also being tested. If one of the already approved drugs has at least partial activity, it could lessen the severity of the disease. That would be the best hope for now.
