By best friend for the past 30 years is, sadly, a repug. She is the most giving person I know and is so smart but she was raised by a Repug Mayor daddy, in a small GA town, and is 76. Sadly, previous to now, she was still in for drumpf, hadn't been able to overcome her conditioning. Yesterday we had lunch after agreeing not to hug or touch each other and of course we talked about this Covid-19. She, like me, was furious about the govt's (drumpfs') lying response and deliberately stopping us from getting tested when needed out of pure politics and no caring for the people. I was shocked in a very happy way, I knew she'd eventually start to get it, she's already turned on Scott (Voldemort). The worm is turning when this lifelong repug, 76 year old southern white woman, sours on drumpf - woohoo!!

(23,102 posts)She never voted for Scott in a race, but she didn't vote for the Democrat either, so at least her vote won't count for drumpf in Nov. That is an improvement. She really needs me and I can't push her away, especially with the loss of her husband and family members, she's my sister of the heart. Plus when I was so disabled last year, she really stood by me and helped me out in so many ways. She is a wonderful person, except for this one huge flaw IMO.
I will be subtly working on her, there is a chance she might support Biden?
I have a sister that I love who voted for Orange Ass. Only reason she ever told me was she thought hed lower her taxes. Shes all about hating to pay taxes. I suspect that a lot of trump voters dont like him but may vote for him again because either they dont want immigrants or they are anti abortion or they think a Dem president will take their guns away.

(6,228 posts)favorite "hate" even if it still hurts them and those they love. I'm seeing trump's coronavirus lack of response could very well due in his reelection.

(6,556 posts)"I like trump because he is helping us get rid of abortion." She also has no problem with kids in cages at the southern border. She would have a hissy fit if either of these two things impacted her family negatively. She was raised in the same home I was. I will never understand what happened to her.

(32,002 posts)Same situation with me. My sister is 2 years older than me and sometimes hints around that I am naive and dont understand the real world.
For example some of her views...
Kids in cages - well they shouldnt have come here in the first place
Abortion - I believe its wrong so it shouldnt be allowed for anyone
Democrats - all they will do is raise our taxes and give free stuff to lazy people who feel entitled to it
I have heard this many times. I dont get it either. How could we be raised in the same family?

(6,556 posts)My sister is actually 14 years younger than I am, but raised by the same parents. The mystery continues.

(5,610 posts)Not intended as a personal slur, just that she is one of millions who have succumbed to the propaganda from the Mango Mussolini cult.
There are a thousand ways to illustrate the brainwashing, but here's one about abortion.
For two years, from January 2017 when Mango Mussolini was "inaugurated", until January of 2019, when the Democrats took back the House, the right wing wackos controlled ALL of the government: the House, the Senate, the White House and the Supreme Court. During those two years, they could have reversed Roe v. Wade, and did nothing. That clearly illustrates that they are NOT "helping us get rid of abortion".

(649 posts)Until Justice Kennedy retired and was replaced by Boof, the Court was 4-4 + one swing vote. The Court, which is the only entity which can overturn Roe v. Wade, is now a solid 5-4 anti-choicers, and you can bet your bottom dollar theyre chomping at the bit for an opportunity to overturn Roe. And, they will. You can take that to the bank.

(5,610 posts)Seems there are ways for Congress to enact new legislation that would accomplish the same objective re restricting abortions. I'm not an attorney, but just still noting that nothing was done.
hangaleft
(649 posts)Not that its feasible, but a Constitutional Amendment would also be a method to overturn Roe.

(12,548 posts)Its because they've cut themselves off from anyone remotely like a trump voter, so therefore they ALL must be racists, nazis, etc. I know people like your friend. I know them well. I know they are not racists. I also know that a few are disillusioned with trump now. Will they vote for Biden? I dont know. I DO know they wouldnt vote for Sanders. But i also believe a couple will simply not cast a vote for president. And trump cant win with that happening. He wont get ANY Hillary voters. He WILL lose some of the Obama/trump voters. He WILL lose older trump voters who have passed away. He WONT gain enough younger 1st time voters to offset that loss.
All that adds up to a tough road for trump

(10,202 posts)Dont get me wrong, Im certainly not happy about how its going, but my relief that that orange fool is finally starting to be seen as what he truly is outweighs my concern for the virus and Im in a fairly high risk bracket.
PatSeg
(47,482 posts)that it took such an extreme crisis to open people's eyes. Trump never for one moment disguised who or what he was, yet people refused to see what was right in front of them. "There are none so blind as those who will not see."

(10,202 posts)When some one keeps telling you who they are, believe then. Or something like that. Its amazing how people will make excuses for someone that they have decided to like.

(47,482 posts)human nature, but I will never, never understand what anyone saw in that man in the first place. From the first time I became really aware of him, I was struck by what a bizarre clownish bore he was and how journalists actually interviewed him like he was relevant.

(6,228 posts)Many repubs most likely will skip voting for President just like folks did with Hillary & would do with BS.

(29,718 posts)she always does because of habit and hatred of Democrats?

(23,102 posts)She's a very determined person and when she settles on a route, she usually sticks to it. She never voted for Scott in any of his races here in FL, and now she's starting to talk about drumpf the way she does about Voldemort. I doubt she will ever vote for a Democrat because of her history, but she will just not vote if she truly disdains the repug. She might consider voting for Biden, but not sure?

(6,917 posts)Trump voters who turn on Trump because he puts them in danger. Fuck everybody else up to this point, now that Trump threatens them they become convinced.
They will become un-convinced as soon as they are out-of-danger and can never be trusted. I will welcome my ex-Trump friends back to civilization, but I will never trust their judgement again.

Now at least you have a lever to lift the boulder of propaganda.

(56,828 posts)and remember seeing a lot of similar stories about Bush in 2003 and 2004, but Bush ended up "winning", and I suspect that many (not all!) of those same people held their noses and still voted Bush. I had a co-worker like that at the time - hated Bush and would answer the phone throughout the summer and into the fall of 2004 by telling everybody to Vote for Kerry (this was a financial services/insurance company) - however, the day after the election he confessed he still voted Bush because he had become so scared of Kerry that he felt he had to vote Bush.
