This shows the pervasive effect of right media bubble that exists merely to run interference and push propaganda for the Trump administration.

The poll found 68 percent of Democrats are worried that someone in their family could catch the virus, while just 40 percent of Republicans and 45 percent of independents share that concern.
The gulf in perception over an outwardly nonpolitical issue underscores how signals from politicians and media outlets have played a critical role in shaping how seriously Americans are taking a viral outbreak that has overwhelmed health care systems and triggered mass quarantines in several countries around the world.
Nearly 80 percent of Democrats believe the worst is yet to come, but just 40 percent of Republicans and 57 percent of independents believe that. Overall, 53 percent of all voters are concerned that someone in their immediate family might contract the coronavirus, and 60 percent believe the worst is yet to come.

(25,479 posts)I have an acquaintance who is literally a brain surgeon who has been posting the "it's not bad as the flu" nonsense, only 1,000 cases, etc. He parrots right-wing nonsense all the time. And, he's a freaking brain surgeon.
He's a right-winger who supported Ben Carson before jumping on the Trump bandwagon. Fox News and Rush are his "sources".

(8,059 posts)worried someone in their family could catch Covid-19? Shouldn't everyone be at least a little concerned--if not for themselves, then for high-risk people? That's very weird. A lot of people feel invulnerable, apparently.

(35,356 posts)If you're older, just "meh."
In some younger age groups close to 60% are convinced they're going to die. 40% chance of contracting it, 1% chance of death. 0.4% chance of a random person in that group dying. Granted, death's by virus isn't a really good thing, but overestimating the risk by 150 times is a bit much.
Even the poll in the OP was billed as (R) v (D) and sort of excluded a group.
