Should Chuck welcome Mitt to the Democratic Caucus? Romney proposing $1,000 check to every American.

GOP Sen. Mitt Romney proposed on Monday sending every American adult $1,000 to ease the financial pain of the coronavirus pandemic that has tanked global markets and threatened to grind U.S. economic activity to a halt.

The proposal from the 2012 Republican nominee for president came as the White House and Congress work to reach an agreement over the necessary stimulus measures to contain the unfolding economic crisis.

National Economic Council Director Larry Kudlow, asked on Monday by a reporter whether the White House would support direct cash assistance to American households, paused and said “we might.”

“The answer: ‘could be,’” Kudlow said.

Markets, which have snapped their 11-year bull run, continued to plunge on Monday despite the Federal Reserve’s announcement over the weekend that it would cut its benchmark rate to nearly zero and begin a massive $700 billion quantitative easing program.

Calls former Fed Chairpersons and asks their opinion of what is being done now. It looks completely stupid to me. Too little too late. Investors are freaked out because our country is going to shut down for a period of time and businesses will NOT be doing business except for grocers and pharmacies.

put the money in the hands of people who desperately need it and will definitely prop up the economy... there still are and will continue to be many adults that don't need that right now... this idea makes me livid

First, we had a shock to the supply side. China's factories shut down. But then we had a shock to the demand side. Nobody is buying anything because the supply chain has stopped and items aren't available. Finally, we have the economic shock form this. Businesses are being shuttered because nobody is buying anything because they have no money and the stores are closed and have nothing to sell.

The only way to address this is to just send people money. Sick pay, unemployment extensions, tax credits/deferment and the like are way too cumbersome, take too long, and aren't enough to live on anyway. The only way to fix this is by sending checks to every family. They should be doing this immediately. I read somewhere that someone suggested $1,000 per adult and $500 for every child in every household.

Of course, this will be hard since we don't want to tax the billionaires/oligarchs. And the entire GOP's only purpose in life these days is to protect trump, not the american people, and this might make trump "look bad."
